New Relic

I appreciate that New Relic is easily integrated into applications for APM and infrastructure for monitoring. Our applications are Ruby on Rails apps and getting them reporting into New Relic is easy to implement. In most cases, it just requires adding the "newrelic" gem and updating the "newrelic.yml" configuration file. Just this simple addition to a project gives us an entrypoint to analyzing performance. We use the New Relic Infrastructure agent by default on all of our cloud based servers. We have this set up with Chef so we don't even think about it; we just spin servers up and go. Minutes later they're reporting into New Relic. We use Terraform to automatically create monitors so we can keep track of the essentials like core processes, disk, CPU, and memory.

Tanium

Tanium is suitable in any sort of organization where you want to look at your machines and what kind of applications they are running. One good example is removing an application from where it is not supposed to be in the organization. By using Tanium trace with basic English, first you can search all the machines which have that application, and second you can create a package either through a power shell command or CLI command and remove that application from all the machines at once. This is really saves lot of manual work, time, and also helps in balancing assets across an organization.

Pros

New Relic

  • New Relic lets you drill down into the nitty-gritty of your application, breaking down requests however far you want in order to inspect the performance of your application throughout the request lifecycle.
  • New Relic offers many integrations with other services and technologies, making it easy to get it set up and start using it.
  • New Relic offers many views and types of visualizations to help you understand what's going on in as much detail as you want to know.

Tanium

  • Tanium helps in identifying a list of infected machines with any vulnerabilities. For example if we create a package with list of Windows vulnerabilities, it will push the package through its sensors to all the nodes, and trace out the infected machines in our organization.
  • It helps in adding IOC's which helps us in track down the hashes or shah files existing with that IOC 's machines.
  • The most impressive thing about Tanium is that it can quarantine the machine of our choice without connecting to the network, which really helps a lot of times in containment of any infected machines.

Cons

New Relic

  • Cloud-centric / OS-centric. There is no/limited ability to query metrics with an agent installed.
  • Insights-based queries (dashboards and alerts) are limited to 1000 (soon to be 2000) records and that doesn't work for enterprise scale.
  • NRQL is awesome -- except when it isn't. The replacement QL is more robust but is significantly more complex to learn.
  • No agent management tools in the platform. And, yes, you will want agent management tools after the first dozen or so deployments.

Tanium

  • One issue is its ring topology, as the data is stored in central hubs and pushed through its peer nodes. If the central hub fails, then the associated node will also result in failure.
  • Another problem is that all Tanium management is on premises requiring the customer to maintain it. If we want ask any help from Tanium support we always get a response like "you are maintaining it yourselves and it's your responsibility.
  • The Tanium User Interface could be improved a bit as, although the tool is rich in performance, a more impressive UI might really attract new customers.

I have not yet found any similar product that offers me this range of features to help us keep our online service fast and reliable. Besides this, New Relic is constantly evolving by adding new plugins to emerging technologies and platforms. Server performance measuring features are a key point as our user database grows.

Usability

New Relic

New Relic interface can be tricky to setup sometimes, especially on dashboards, but the overall usability is great. We also find particularly interesting the chart creation tools. There are no major issues that prevented us using any of their services.

There are times I feel that the initial support is lacking. And in some cases the automated responses of not hearing anything are annoying if the reason why there has been no movement is because we are still waiting to hear back from NR support. So, i think they should loose the automation as it can seem disingenuous

The documentation was clear and concise; the only issue we ran into was custom application naming. Due to HTTPD mod_fcgid and the need for the application name to be set in php.ini (not in .htaccess or the virtual host directive) ... we had issues setting this up.

Alternatives Considered

New Relic

We had originally looked into CloudWatch to monitor our resources since we have our stack built in AWS, but found that it would take additional work to setup the dashboards, alerts, and details that we wanted to see in our reports. It was worth the additional investment for us to get the data we needed with less work.

Tanium

Tanium is best for identifying infrastructure infections, and it is easy use where a user who has basic English knowledge can search his queries very easily. Tanium's exceptional feature is quarantining the machine from network, and this is a really impressive feature which should gain them new customers. Tanium helps in removing the suspicious application quickly, which saves time and manual work.

Return on Investment

New Relic

  • New Relic helps us detect defects before our customers do.
  • New Relic helps us prioritize performance improvements. Engineers don't need to spend time measuring the latency of transactions themselves.
  • New Relic helps us notify the appropriate people rapidly when there are problems.

Tanium

  • Adding the IOC 's tracing infected machines, and removing unwanted applications quickly.
  • Quarantine the infected machine from the network in order to prevent it from causing damage or infecting other machines.
  • The user interface could be improved.
