Oracle Enterprise Manager
Chose Oracle Enterprise Manager
Oracle Enterprise Manager is better than Toad in that it allows you to do various server configurations that Toad doesn't allow.
Chose Oracle Enterprise Manager
Kibana from Elastic is another monitoring tool that claims to provide very similar information to OEM.
It seems to be an information tool rather than a tool that can actually make changes within a database.
I think Kibana is more robust for hardware versus database software so it …
Chose Oracle Enterprise Manager
Toad for Oracle is more suited for individual users who have a strong focus on database development, and it is not as comprehensive as Oracle Enterprise Manager. While it is quite decent in logical database layer tasks, such as schema objects and SQL, it lacks visibility into …
Chose Oracle Enterprise Manager
It is much simpler to install and configure as compared to Spotlight and Solarwinds.
Oracle Enterprise Manager measures performance diagnostics accurately and raises alerts and takes preventive actions. Other products can not take preventive actions even if they raise alerts. It …
Chose Oracle Enterprise Manager
We have not used any other products to monitor and/or manage our oracle instances. We have always used Enterprise Manager, although we did use a previous version (11g Grid Control), right around the time I arrived at my position. I upgraded to 12c Cloud Control with the …
Oracle GoldenGate
Chose Oracle GoldenGate
We evaluated SQData, Dell Shareplex and some other replication software. OGG was our choice for breadth of services and wide range of RDBMS and Big Data solutions it supports.
Chose Oracle GoldenGate

Oracle Golden Gate is very user friendly product and very easy to install, setup and troubleshoot.

Quest SharePlex is bit complicated compared to Oracle Golden Gate and has less features.

Chose Oracle GoldenGate
We used the SharePlex replication product about 6 years ago. It had limited functionalities, was not able to fulfill our needs.
Chose Oracle GoldenGate
SharePlex offers a cheaper alternative and is sometimes faster performing as well for simpler replication needs, but Oracle GoldenGate comes with tonnes of features that I have not seen in any other competing technology. OGG offers real time flat file generation, integration …
Chose Oracle GoldenGate
Oracle GoldenGate is much faster than Oracle Streams in all of the testing that we did. Oracle Streams is also deprecated as of 12c. There's a reason Oracle went out and purchased GoldenGate, what Oracle GoldenGate is able to do from a replication perspective is amazing. As …

Oracle
OEM is very well suited for all Oracle products, especially Oracle databases and Exadata machines; even not Oracle hardware, it is very good and displaying high level details. OEM is not well suited for older hardware vendors like AIX, HP-UX, DEC/Digital, Microsoft (sql server). This is a big negative as most large companies have a heterogeneous environment with many different vendor hardware and (database) software products.

I think it's a great product. We apply Oracle GoldenGate to several use cases in our organization. 1. Business Continuity Planning, 2. Query Offloading through data replication to a reporting instance of our data, 3. looking into data transformations to help support various queries for different teams within the business.

Toad for Oracle is very well suited for all Oracle implementations, be it single instance or RAC. It is best suited for use of Oracle DBA, Developer and Database Engineers. I don't recommend Toad for Oracle for Project Managers or Solution Architects. This can be a pricier choice for these people. They can do fine with free options like SQL Developer.

Pros
Oracle
  • Monitoring Templates: There are out of box monitoring templates for each target types, you can customize them or use them as it is.
  • Administrative Groups: This is a relatively new feature in OEM Cloud Control. This lets you create and manage your targets and monitoring templates smarter and with less re-work.
  • DB Monitoring: There are so many cool DB monitoring features and visual graphics, that it can be used by both DBA and functional people to see what's going on in the database.

  • As the product under the Oracle umbrella, it perfectly and natively supports the Oracle database very well.
  • For the standard scenario and use cases, the configuration is straight-forward (in our case uni-direction copy from source to target).
  • It is robust and the performance meets our SLA, even for a large amount of data volume.
  • The error report is not only detailed but hits the right points, so trouble shooting is easy.

  • Toad is a de-facto standard tool for data developers and analysts. Generally speaking it provides almost every function needed to manage data in EDW with great performance and stability.
  • The nature of clinical data is big-sized: one table may have billions of rows. Toad provides critical functions to manage SQLs, e.g. Top SQL that can monitor and manage SQLs using CPU power and network bandwidth, so that EDW administrator can optimize ETL operations in the best efficiency.
  • Many of our data analysts are not computer science backgrounded (having clinical / nursing background). Toad provides great auditing tools such as Tuning Lab or SQL Scanner, so that data analysts can train themselves with guidance of the tool.

Cons
Oracle
  • Bugs. Every version we upgrade to has a number of bugs. Some stop us from rolling to production OEM (we have a sandbox OEM), some are simply annoying. If I could improve on one thing, it would be for better QA from oracle before releasing each version.
  • Flash. I'm told that they are moving from Flash to Jet in version 13.3 and beyond (we are on 13.2 currently). That change cannot come soon enough. The OEM pages load SO slowly due to Flash.
  • Hierarchy Groups. OEM allows five Hierarchy groups. A Hierarchy group allows a top down metric/rule roll out. However, they limit you to five. I'd like to see them open that up, so that we can have any number of custom groups.

  • The earlier versions of Golden Gate were complex to use as there was no front end. All that works was the command line.
  • The cost of the product can be a detriment to most companies.
  • The product has been augmented over the years and has so many features that it can be overwhelming.

  • The power and control it gives is at the same time kind of a negative thing. There's too many options available, even when you don't need them. For simple database operations it's sometimes easier to just use SQL Developer since navigation is way more intuitive and easy.
  • Related with the above: there is a steep learning curve. However, since this is the main tool for any Oracle developer, this is not that much of a problem.
  • If I remember well, Toad used to be free, some 20 years ago. Or at least had a free version. It would be nice to have a free version. The dedicated Oracle developers and DBA's won't use the free version, but all the rest of us developers might use it instead of SQL Developer. It would make communications between everybody somewhat easier.

Usability
Oracle
It's great! It does everything and anything you would want it to do. It can monitor things which doesn't comes out of the box by adding plug ins to it, for example, you can even monitor Oracle GoldenGate Replication by adding a plug-in to OEM Cloud Control.

Once set up, it's very easy to use and keep running, it's getting to that point that can make it cumbersome to some. Also, depending on the data that you want to replicate, the configuration files can become quite cumbersome to maintain. Learning curve can be high for some who are not as experienced with databases and transactions.

I give is an 8 because nothing is a 10 and there is always room for improvement. I believe the user who is not as technologically inclined would be better suited with an easier way to identify the options for setting the layout up for Toad's GUI. To some it is very cumbersome and confusing.

I still rate OEM as a must-have tool for central management of Oracle fleet. The pros and cons of the product is prominent. Meanwhile, I also acknowledge that OEM was design about a decade ago. At that time, it did not have the landscape we have today, such as cloud, DEVOPS, machine learning, etc. I hope in future releases, the design will incorporate those features.

Oracle Support for Oracle GoldenGate has been quite responsive and quite helpful in the few situations where we've needed it. Furthermore, the documentation on Oracle GoldenGate is so good that we often do not need to contact support with issues as the fix is already documented and able to be run by us without needing to open a ticket.

I give the overall support for Toad for Oracle a 10/10. This is because whenever there has been an issue with this software, our team has got an immediate response. The same can not be said for similar software. The most recent example of this is when we needed to renew our licenses. Some employees were unable to log in to code with the given license key. Support was able to resolve the issue quickly.

We've had Oracle consultants come as well for training days to talk about new features, parts of Oracle GoldenGate we may not be using and things of that nature. The consultants they send are great as they're very knowledgeable about all things Oracle GoldenGate and great resources for any questions or concerns you may have with the product.

We used Oracle University for our Oracle Golden Gate Training and it was top notch. If Oracle GoldenGate is new to your organization, expose as many DBAs as possible to it. Having your whole team fluent in it will overcome early operational hurdles and allow it to more quickly become an accepted and supported part of your supported platform for your team that will enable the business to use it to its fullest.

We use Oracle Data Guard as a backup tool, but not for data replication. Data Guard is not suited for real-time data replication in our non-normalized reporting database nor for the database we are using for our upgrade project, as Data Guard is not able to transform data and is not able to synchronize data into different schemas, which is necessary for our project. Additionally, our project database is on Oracle 12g not 11i: I am not 100% sure Data Guard is able to replicate from 11i to 12g

Toad is much better than Tableau query writer. Tableau is not intuitive and requires knowledge of proprietary database language to fully implement. Tableau does not perform as quickly and accurately as Toad. Toad is very easy and slim to install. Additional hardware is often required to run Tableau smoothly. Support for Tableau is even more expensive than Toad support.

  • We are a 7x24 shop. Oracle Enterprise Manager Cloud Control helps us meet that objective by proactively warning us before issues cause down time. Things like disk space, archive log issues or temporary table space issues.
  • Spreading the use of this tool outside of the DBA group has allowed us to not hire additional personnel for those teams. Over time, as folks have retired from our operations team, we are not replacing them. Instead we have used OEM Cloud Control to automate tasks.
  • We also now have the tools to measure up-time by using specific measurements inside of OEM. This allows us to report real numbers to management.

  • In earlier versions, DDL support was limited as well as the need of primary key constraints in the source tables. This made me create partitions, sub-partitions, truncatations and perform other operations upon they are performed in source systems and I need to discuss with source system administrators and need to convince them to let them create primary keys for replicated tables.
  • But both issues are solved now.
  • Installation is straightforward, easy.
  • Deployed everything within Oracle Data Integrator.
  • Developing 1000 of ODI interfaces for loading into Operational Data Store took not more than 100 man/days. But, adding them to Golden Gate is taking not more than 5 man/days.
  • Management Pack and VeriData are additional packs for your management and data verification needs.

  • Quick and easy query development helps reduce man-hours in a project which converts to real dollars.
  • Query analysis and tuning result in low database overhead and low latency, thus translating into real dollars because a system can thus handle more requests from customers.
  • Ease of use makes it easy to deploy greenhorns in projects with minimal training, thus helping save money. Otherwise menial and simple jobs would have required experienced DBAs.
