What is Oracle SD-WAN (Talari)?

The vendor states that Oracle SD-WAN was created to solve the ongoing IT challenges network managers face every day—from expensive, sluggish, inflexible WANs to difficulties deploying new office WAN links and accessing cloud services. With Oracle SD-WAN, enterprises can benefit from internet economics, leverage high-bandwidth and inexpensive Internet connections, and safely migrate applications to the public cloud and SaaS at their own pace. The technology is based on Oracle's 2018 acquisition of Talari. Some Talari SD-WAN appliances are still sold under the brand name, Talari, as part of the Oracle SD-WAN solution.

We use Oracle [SD-WAN (Talari)] to connect our branch offices to our two main datacenters using two separate ISPs. This is used across the entire organization and allows us to provide private connectivity between sites without having to purchase expensive and high-touch private circuits, such as MPLS, VPLS, point-to-point, etc.
  • Set it and forget it
  • Very reliable platform
  • Truly makes Internet connectivity like private connectivity
  • Talari Aware management solution very complex to set up useful dashboards
  • Management interface seems overly complex (7.3), though this was supposedly improved in 9.0
Product has been around for a long time and the stability and features are excellent. Now that Oracle owns it, its long-term viability is both improved (given Oracle isn't going anywhere anytime soon), but all the layers of bureaucracy and auditing that Oracle is famous for comes along with it.
  • Sub-second latency and packet loss detection and remediation
  • Simple portfolio
  • New Cloud functionality
  • For lower-bandwidth requirements (100's of Mbps) it is very cost-effective vs. the other big names
  • Hardware is reasonably priced
While I haven't looked at Silverpeak in a long time and haven't used any of the other big players, this product is a dedicated SD-WAN solution, so no need to get a combination device, unless that's important. We will likely implement SD-WAN through our next firewall platform refresh as a backup to Talari.
