Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Our students with documented disabilities (like dyslexia) use Read&Write daily. This allows each student to work at their own pace instead of waiting for a teacher to assist. It allows the students to be more independent by taking the initiative to meet their needs.

Pros

  • It is easy to use.
  • It works across multiple programs.
  • It is easy to understand what is being said.

Cons

  • I have not had any issues with it.
  • I can't think of an improvement.

Return on Investment

  • This helps our students who need material read aloud to have control of exactly what needs to be read aloud to assist.
  • This program provides students who need support to perform speech-to-text independent of any additional assistance.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

I use Read&Write with my SPED students who need assistive technology support to complete writing assignments. Usually, they use speech-to-text, text-to-speech, and word prediction features. Other features are explored and have been used with the dictionaries. The program addresses spelling and text composition (students with dysgraphia or dyslexia). and editing. It also assists those with disabilities in completing their assigned work and gives them access to educational opportunities alongside their age-level peers. The overall scope is to provide alternate ways of writing so the student can show their true capacity for knowledge and not be restricted by the writing process.

Pros

  • Word Prediction.
  • Text to speech.
  • Speech to Text.
  • Dictionary

Cons

  • Grammar check seems finicky and does not always point out simple corrections to punctuation and capitalization.
  • At times the word prediction takes time to pop up.
  • Also text to speech is not always accurate.

Return on Investment

  • Increased student's engagement with writing.
  • Improved students' learning goals by showing a truer picture of their knowledge.
  • Helps a student save time and frustration especially if handwriting is a struggle.
  • Improved inclusion because the program was available to all students.

Read&Write in Schools

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Our school district purchased licenses. t’s an incredibly helpful tool for supporting reading and writing, especially for students who benefit from additional scaffolding. The text-to-speech feature is one of the most valuable components- it allows users to hear text read aloud, which supports comprehension and helps with proofreading written work. I’ve also found the word prediction and dictionary tools to be useful for improving writing independence and vocabulary development.

Another strength is how easy it is to integrate with Google Docs and other Google tools, making it very accessible in classroom and remote learning environments. The interface is user-friendly, and students can learn to navigate it fairly quickly with some guidance.

Overall, Google Read&Write is a great support for students with diverse learning needs, including those with reading difficulties, writing challenges, or attention-related needs. It’s a practical and effective tool that promotes independence and confidence in academic tasks.

Pros

  • word prediction feature

Cons

  • easier integration with PDF annotation

Return on Investment

  • improved inclusion for students

Multi-featured tool to support a variety of learning or working needs

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

I have used Read&Write as a special educator and found it supported students from grade one to adults. From highlighting, to being able to digitize paper handouts, to always having text to speech available it always has the right tool to support students. I like that there is even math support included. I also appreciate the consistent improvement to the tool as someone who has used it for many years. Overall, Read&Write is beneficial to students because of the broad range of supports it offers in one toolbar.

Pros

  • One of my favorite features is the ability to highlight and collect the highlights. Students had great success highlighting text that supported their written responses, color coding it by topic or question number, and then collecting all of that by color. This helped them write their responses by having all of the information they needed organized for them to reference.
  • For older students with multiple teachers, Read&Write provides the support for students to be independent and self-advocate by providing Screenshot Reader. If a teacher gives a handout rather than a digital version recommended for the student, the student can take a picture of the paper and can be quickly interacting with that content by using the toolbar.
  • Screen masking is very helpful for students who have trouble with tracking and attention challenges. I have found that the customization settings allow me to find what is just right for students so that their attention is focused and efforts can be put towards reading.

Cons

  • I'd like to see the reliability of the tool to be more consistent. At times when using it, it doesn't respond in contexts it is supposed to work. I most often see this with the screenshot reader.
  • Talk & Type accuracy could be improved. Students often become frustrated and don't want to use this feature if they repeatedly have inaccurate results.
  • It would be really nice to see some capability added for non-standard speakers. An ability to train it to the voice of a student with articulation difficulties would be one example.

Return on Investment

  • Improved progress toward IEP goals for students using it to read and respond to text.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

I am one of the district occupational therapists. I use this program to support students who struggle with writing, especially in spelling. I also use it with orthopedic students to shorten keystrokes using the word prediction feature. I serve students from ages 3 through 21 and am hopeful of bridging gaps and addressing learning differences. This program is awesome for students who need text-to-speech and speech-to-text, along with a robust word prediction feature, to support their written expression and goals in their general and special education classrooms.

Pros

  • Ease of Use of Text to Speech to bridge gaps for students who have difficulty reading at an independent reading level that matches their grade level.
  • Robust word prediction that helps phonetic spellers.

Cons

  • I liked the old topic dictionary from the co-writer. I understand that this may link to unwanted topics, but it was much more user-friendly and helpful for predicting words that go with a subject.

Return on Investment

  • From one sentence on paper to five sentence paragraphs.
  • Increase in student confidence with their writing.
