Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use Amazon Web Services day to day depending on the different business use-cases. For instance for solving any event driven architecture problems we extensively use SQS, SNS & Lambdas. For dealing and handling large data we use S3, Glue Jobs, OpenSearch. For hosting our services we use ECS, to launch containerised services, exposed behind a VPN and API Gateway configuration. Logs across the services as captured in Amazon Web Services Cloudwatch.

Pros and Cons

Pros

Great UI Interface, that allows to quickly test things and check status.
Lots of support available for creating templates, to containerise your service architecture.
Good reliability on the availability of the services being used.

Cons

There can be better docs, around some technologies such as Event Bridge.
It can add more details around the costing of the services we are using and show us a view on the same page.

Return on Investment

It has helped us achieve our business KPIs
It helps us track metrics across various business aspects, such as productivity improvement, etc.
It helps us to effectively manage our costs. We have been able to reduce our total costs by around 25% using Amazon Web Services services.

Usability

Overall basis the features and the services that Amazon Web Services provides, we get a lot of value out of it. It genuinely offers great market leading tools with great support. The tools work as expected, while effectively managing our transaction costs and reducing operational overhead. We are able to track our business KPIs effectively.

Alternatives Considered

Azure Functions, Google Cloud Functions and Google Cloud Storage

Amazon Web Services Lambda supports more triggers, richer language/runtime support, and has tighter integrations with Amazon Web Services, as compared to Azure/Google Cloud Functions.Amazon Web Services also has better global infrastructure, with 33 regions and 105 availability zones. Amazon Web Services S3 is more mature, has 11+ 9s durability, supports object lifecycle rules, intelligent tiering, Glacier, etc as compared to GCP’s Cloud Storage which lacks feature depth (e.g., S3 Access Points, Bucket Policies by VPC, or strong consistency at scale).

If you want to quickly launch large scaled applications along with reliability, availability, scalability and business insights, Amazon Web Services is a great place to host your entire business.

For relatively low scale application Amazon Web Services might sometimes seem like an overkill, as it promotes a more micro-service architecture, which may or may not always make sense depending on individual business use-cases.
