Overall Satisfaction with BigCommerce

BigCommerce is our connection with the world. As an eCommerce company, we wouldn't exist without a good host, and BigCommerce fills that role for us. They provide the face of our company, the primary point of contact and interaction with our customers, and the admin back-end needed to stay organized. We needed a host that has practically no downtime and flexible enough with add-ons to customize to our unique needs.
  • BigCommerce is a good value for what it does. The pricing tiers seem fair and designed to grow with the business instead of hiding necessary features behind the more expensive tiers in an effort to push people to upgrade.
  • BigCommerce's live support is knowledgeable and easy to reach. I've rarely ever had a wait time to connect with a live person.
  • BigCommerce's add-on store is fully featured and well filled out. If someone's built an add-on for eCommerce, you can bet they've ported it to BigCommerce.
  • Their report/metrics system needs a little work. Given they're an eCommerce host, I'm a little surprised they don't support quarterly reports natively but instead require you to do custom time-frame reports.
  • Their add-on store is great *but* that comes at a price. Everything ends up having a monthly cost to it, and that stacks up.
  • The coupon system isn't as flexible as I'd like, especially when dealing with products with multiple variations. There's no easy way to have a coupon to discount one variation. For example: overstocked on XXXL Tshirts? Coupons can only apply to "Tshirts" but not specific sizes.
  • BigCommerce integrates well with our shipping platform, saving us minutes on each order (and that adds up quickly)
  • Order fulfillment doesn't require any manual input (products, addresses, etc.) which streamlines our process greatly. Just weigh the package & print label.
  • Abandoned cart recovery feature has about 25% return for us (1 out of 4 abandoned carts check out after automated email).
We have actually used their full range of offered plans, from the standard plan all the way to a custom quoted enterprise plan, as our needs grew or shrank. We never had an issue upgrading or downgrading plans and were thrilled with how easy they made it scale to our requirements each time.
We haven't custom-built any integrations ourselves (though from what I've heard, it is fairly easy to do so), but we do use a handful of add-ons that integrate well with BigCommerce. Through their integrations we have expanded our mailing list, added a fully featured purchase rewards system to increase customer loyalty, integrated shipment management software, and more. Each system, once set up, is seamless with BigCommerce and acts almost at a "native feature" level, no hacky techniques required.
If you've been in the eCommerce business for long and don't roll your own solution, odds are you've compared Shopify against BigCommerce. We started on Shopify but decided to switch when Shopify wanted to penalize us 1% of our gross sales for not using their in-house credit card processor. We technically couldn't use their processor, as our products were against the processor's ToS (but not Shopify's), which just added insult to injury. Even if we could have though, you convince your customers to use your services by offering good value and a better product, not penalizing them into submission.

All that said though, we've found BigCommerce to be more "power-user" friendly anyways, so we've been happy with our digital home and have had no desire to switch to something else in almost half a decade.
If you're selling items and want to run your own store, BigCommerce is for you. They're easy to use and pretty flexible. If you want an information-only website (no sales), there are cheaper options out there. If you're selling unique items (like original art or crafts), there are probably other websites that will serve you better, since BigCommerce is designed to handle items that you stock a number of rather than unique one-off products. If you fit their target niche though, they're great.
