Overall Satisfaction with Canto

My organization uses CANTO to collect, structure, store, and distribute content (pictures, videos, stories, publications) and, to a lesser extent coordinate and plan content use for external and internal communication. The system is optimized for quick and easy access from nearly every country we work from (mainly Africa and Europe), and it can be worked with from computers as well as tablets and mobile phones. The interface (filters, albums, presets, ...) is highly customizable, which is great, but it also means a clear idea of the structure you want to set up before starting to work is a good idea. Users can communicate on the platform itself with comments and save their own searches and collections. The main functions the majority of our users currently use are making "best of" collections and sending links to (often large) files to internal and external contacts. CANTO also has a style guide function, which is also very handy to share e.g., with external designers. The CANTO customer support is very responsive. Even if some issues cannot be resolved right away, you always get an answer (from a real person, not a bot). I also like the tutorials library on their website. Among the few things, I would improve are the ways in which user groups can collaborate.
  • Accessibility from basically everywhere and across platforms.
  • Search and filter function.
  • Responsive and helpful customer support.
  • Curate content function can be "misused" to plan and coordinate across teams.
  • Excellent reporting features and dashboard on what goes on in your CANTO.
  • Good version control, easy to update outdated or changed files, and revert back to older versions if needed.
  • Workspace functionalities are not always clear.
  • User groups collaboration and user rights could be more varied.
  • The way in which some files are sorted could be solved differently.
  • Easy sharing of large files.
  • Search and filter for assets.
  • Accessibility from nearly everywhere.
  • POS: time to find assets has been greatly decreased - faster workflows.
  • POS: colleagues report not being dependent on a single content-savvy person anymore to get suitable content.
  • POS: no need for FTP-server, transfer, google drive share links,... anymore to share large files.
  • NEG: streamlining the process of how to upload content to CANTO led to some delays in the availability of content for the organization (personal resources issue, not databank related).
I have excellent experience with customer support. Communication is with a real person, not a bot. Both our dedicated customer support and the helpline ticket service are always helpful and good listeners.
Bynder has more focus on media creation and brand management; we needed an easy way to access mainly pictures and stories from all our locations and from the field.

CANTO is well suited if you, like us, have a large team with members across several countries, a large pool of assets, and your colleagues need to find specific content fast. It is also well suited if you work a lot with external contacts and as an archive for past materials, campaigns, and reports... that need to stay accessible for internal use. You need to dedicate a full-time position to managing and maintaining the database for an organization of the medium size and to train your employees on how to use it (believe me). CANTO is not well suited - in my opinion - for smaller teams or if you use your content only once or twice and then move on to entirely new campaigns. I would also not use it for dynamic content (like word documents that are still commented on and being rewritten).
