Overall Satisfaction with CloudFlare
We use CloudFlare for many client sites. It provides a quick and easy performance layer and SSL. It is a very quick solution for sites that need a bit of a performance boost in the frontend and/or an SSL certificate, and either has server or budget limitations that prevent other solutions.
- Caching
- Redundancy
- SSL
- DNS Management
- CDN
- Security
- User Interface - clunky when managing multiple sites in the same account
- Error catching/logging - sometimes difficult to troubleshoot non-standard situations
- Page Rules - great feature, very versatile, but could be more intuitive
- Improved Performance improves conversions
- Free SSL improves rankings and trust factor
- Some lost time troubleshooting unclear situations
- Amazon CloudFront, LetsEncrypt and AutoSSL
Amazon CloudFront is a higher level CDN. It can require a bit more expertise and take some extra time to get working, but can provide better performance results. It can replace some of CloudFlare's functionality or be integrated with it. We often use CloudFlare for smaller quick implementations, and have used CloudFront for some larger projects.
LetsEncrypt and AutoSSL are alternate ways to obtain a free SSL certificate. Both can be a bit easer to implement than CloudFlare in general, if your hosting software includes them. Otherwise, manually installing them can be time-consuming.
