Overall Satisfaction with Dropbox

We use Dropbox across the company for document storage and collaboration, particularly of any documents being shared externally (marketing, BD) or for internal cross-functional purposes.

Pros

  • File structures
  • Sharing links to documents
  • Different permission levels

Cons

  • In my experience, absolutely terrible real-time document collaboration (commenting, tagging, multiple users adding line edits). Was manageable to work around via google docs before that integration was discontinued. Now it’s ground real-time collaboration to a halt across our company.
  • Real-time editing UI in the browser
  • Everything takes 5+ clicks
  • Very negative. In my experience, processes take much longer for critical, multistakeholder documents. Because online real-time collab is so bad, everyone is downloading, working async, and trying to manage version control in a baton format, which takes longer, reduces visibility, and inevitably has errors.
  • We would switch to Google Suite if it weren’t for the high switching cost/effort and having just switched to Dropbox ~2-3 years ago. Many of the leadership are appalled and continue to press for it esp after Dropbox dropped Google Docs support.
We switched from Google Suite before I joined, I think due to some security concern about Google Drive/Google Suite. But having used Google Suite at my old company, in my opinion, the functionality of Dropbox is truly terrible by comparison. I think we unfortunately agree though that SharePoint/Teams would be worse.

Do you think Dropbox delivers good value for the price?

Not sure

Are you happy with Dropbox's feature set?

No

Did Dropbox live up to sales and marketing promises?

I wasn't involved with the selection/purchase process

Did implementation of Dropbox go as expected?

I wasn't involved with the implementation phase

Would you buy Dropbox again?

No

Well suited: basic document storage and sharing

Less appropriate: any kind of sharing and collaboration on a document.

I think Dropbox somehow feels worse today than it was 10 years ago.
