Overall Satisfaction with Dropbox

We are a coporate media production department with an international company and we utilize Dropbox to send and request media from around the world.

Pros

  • Requesting files from partners is awesome
  • Managing transfer links is great
  • uploading files quickly from my computer via the mac desktop app is the way to use Dropbox

Cons

  • I think the web interface can be overwhelming
  • I wish I could set files to auto delete after a sertain time frame. I believe transfers that have expired automatically delete after a time but I don't have control over that.
  • I am clearly more efficient because I can work from anywhere when my files are on uploaded to dropbox
  • We don't have the need to courier as many drives back and forth between our editors
Its not a 10 simply because the web interface has a lot going on and can be overwhelming. Otherwise I trust my files are safe and I love the Mac app.
Because we use Dropbox mainly for housing project media I'll use that as the frame of reference: Frame.io is made for media production from start to finish so I have to say that in many ways it outshines Dropbox as a media transfer, edit, and review tool. I have not utilized Dropbox Relay much but I can see where that make is a little more of a contender against Frame.io. The company I'm currenlty with does not pay for Frame.io and has instead chosen Dropbox but honestly if it were up to me I think we'd benefit from switchin to it. Google Drive has a suite of tools that we simply do not need. It is a solid option and is reliable however I've come across file types that it can not handel that Dropbox can. OneDrive in my opinion is not reliable. The Deskotp app is clitchy (i'm on a Mac) and it feels slow and outdated. I like that I can trust Dropbox to work and I know my files are safe.

Dropbox is great when working with remote partners. Sharing a folder with the media from a shoot is easy and painless.
