Nearly Perfect Payroll Software
Overall Satisfaction with Gusto
I get paid via Gusto as a contractor, and I also help run payroll for a number of businesses. I have recommended it to probably a dozen clients. It effectively takes away all stress about managing payroll, taxes, benefits, timekeeping, etc. But, at the same time, it doesn't feel like a mega-company like ADP or Paychex. It is in the sweet spot for me, both on the contractor end, and as someone who runs payroll for other businesses.
Pros
- Gusto makes onboarding employees and ensuring their documents are signed very easy.
- The way you can integrate things like Google Workspace makes both onboarding new employees into the apps you use a breeze, as well as when you need to offboard them.
- Managing benefits is simple, because they take care of all the heavy lifting. I just have to review the options, make a selection, and they take it from there.
Cons
- Timekeeping and scheduling could use some work. It is one area that I feel like other companies do better in, and I hope they improve. We need to be able to schedule within Gusto, so that we can compare timesheets to actual shifts.
- For me, it is hard to quantify payroll software as having an ROI. It does save quite a bit of time per pay period, so perhaps we could assign a theoretical number to an employee taking that time. I'd say, at the least, it saves 30-60 minutes a pay period compared to a more difficult-to-use payroll software.
Both When I Work and Wave Accounting are not exactly an apples-to-apples comparison with Gusto, as each one has a benefit that Gusto does not currently provide (scheduling shifts in When I Work, and accounting in Wave). Gusto wins on all other fronts. However, I can integrate with When I Work currently, so its weakness is effectively already covered.
