Overall Satisfaction with HipChat

Our organization uses HipChat for both work and play. We have HipChat rooms for individual teams as well as for semi-work related topics such as our internal ping pong bracket and "Where Are We Going for Lunch Today?" Additionally, we use HipChat to stay in touch on a one-on-one basis as we are spread over several offices across the globe. When it comes to immediate, short communications, HipChat seems to be the default way of communicating.
  • Private and Public Chat Rooms - It's being able to have organization-wide chat rooms as well as private chat rooms with specific team members.
  • Mobile App Functionality - Being able to get my HipChats on the go enables me to stay connected when I'm out of the office or in a meeting without a laptop. I appreciate being able to only have certain notifications turned on as it stops me from be inundated with messages I don't want to see when I'm on the go.
  • Reference - Being able to search through old HipChats on a conversation by conversation basis is super convenient and stops me having to dig through emails or re-ask questions of people.
  • Aesthetics - This is a minor complaint, but I would like to be able to customize the aesthetic of my instance of HipChat. Currently users can only customize their profile picture.
  • HipChat has increased the effiency with which I am able to communicate with my coworkers, particularly those who work out of other offices. Having a light, portable messaging solution has been beneficial for checking in on small things without the need to send emails or schedule phone calls.
I was not involved in the selection process for HipChat at my organization. However, I have used several comparable products throughout my professional career and I've found HipChat to the best among them. Being the most user-friendly, least resource-intensive, and and most feature-rich among the platforms I have used, HipChat stands out from the pack for in-organization communication.
HipChat would be equally well-suited to a small organization as to a large one. I feel as though there aren't any "key questions" to ask in the selection process as far as choosing communications platform/chat client. If you're looking for a robust, feature-rich chat client that is not resource intensive, then HipChat is what you're looking for.
