Overall Satisfaction with Jama Connect
Our entire company uses Jama Connect to document the following:
- Risk Management File
- User Needs
- System Requirements
- Software Requirements
- Requirement Traceability
- FMEA (use, software, and process)
- Software Development Plan
- Verification Plan and Report
- Validation Plan and Report
We pretty much use it for the entire software development lifecycle and utilize its review/approval and baselining system for our controlled documents.
We also use it to send to our customers either via a direct Jama review or export to PDF/Microsoft Word.
We also use commenting feature within the review process to be able to edit on the spot per item per comment then publishing a new version of the document for baseline and review.
Pros
- Requirement Tracing
- Tracking review comments
- Customization of set types
- Customer service
Cons
- Efficiency with loading the pages.
- More white space in the UI. Breathability
- Make Suspect identifiers more valuable
- FDA approvals are easy because of document export. Can export documents in a matter of seconds.
- Viewing tracing to verification documents so easily reduced our planning time by 5x for identifying what tests are needed for regression.
The outcomes we expect are to be able to see our design inputs, design outputs, verification results, and validation results all in one place with full traceability between them.
Then we should be able to export these documents in an instant, and also generate a trace matrix that is clear and complete.
With this we are able to clearly identify the functionality of our product as well as the design and testing done on our product all in one clear place.
And so far, it has been doable, there may have been some quirks, but it’s been working really well for us.
Setting up the templates for example is one of the tougher parts that required troubleshooting. And also the performance can take a huge hit if the files and system are so large. It can also take a hit if more people are logged into the software. So hopefully performance improvements is a top priority and it would make the experience much much better.
Jama connect is amazingly effective. It’s miles ahead of DOORS, PTC Integrity, and Codebeamer.
The tracing usability is so simple and it just makes sense. You can set rules on what items can be traced to what items. Can view the trace matrix in a simple workflow view. And then actually add the trace with nearly a single button. Compared to other tools like Codebeamer they have this field that you have to type in the trace and it doesn’t have a list view to see it all so it’s cumbersome. Jama is cleaner and easier to use.
Reviewing these files are also easy and tracking your notifications isn’t overwhelming.
- codeBeamer ALM and PTC Windchill RV&S
It’s easier to use, easier to trace requirements and verification and has a better UI
These other tools feel more like glorified excel sheets whereas Jama actually feels intentional with being an ALM tool.

As stated before tracing is much faster, creating the tracing matrix/workflow is easy like using a Miro workflow.
It’s just easier to read everything.
