Compared to other technologies I have used to manage requirements, Jama Connect has been a good tool that is user-friendly and has been satisfying our needs. Other tools I have tried where either not that intuitive or were too cumbersome to adapt. With the access levels we have for Jama Connect, basically everyone is able to contribute in Jama Connect, creating items, sending them for reviews and checking on the traceability. The process we have in place in using Jama Connect has been working out well for us.

Jama Connect's collaboration ability with the review center and @ mention capabilities were the biggest selling points to procure the tool. Our company collaborates primarily through @ mentions in various other tools, so it was incredibly important to have those references sent to users primary email box, which Jama Connect provides. Furthermore, traceability is extremely easy to follow and setup where as other prior tools required extensive knowledge of tool or was extremely cumbersome.

I have been an admin with Top Team Analyst as well as have played/practiced a bit with Visure and Doors. Jama is considerably better than Visure and Doors on the collaboration, reviews and traceability than Visure and Doors. Top Team analyst is a closer competitor that has better strengths in layout and form than Jama when writing detailed solutions and work packages, but Jama is better in collaboration and reviews for sure.

We only tried PDF documents before, and I don't think I need to describe how bad it was. Now, we can filter, tag, and group requirements. Manage their lifecycle. Easily update with version control. This was not available with PDFs.

The 'Review Center' in Jama is particularly useful and popular with our users. They like it for "both sides" - both as Review Moderator role, and as Reviewers.
The Jama interface is reasonably intuitive so it is relatively easy to get new users oriented and actually doing work. I've worked with other RM tools, and Jama is the one with the least steep 'adoption curve' in my experience.

Jama is much more efficient in streamlining collaboration compared to working in local files such as Microsoft Excel. The biggest savings are in maintaining traceability in JAMA versus across multiple local files which require two-way updates for any changes.

The canonical low-cost option is Excel which is not feature complete from a requirements development standpoint. However, there is some utility in the fact that the "flat" file can be modified and included in other "flat" documents for deliverable to the customer. The fact that Jama can retain the review history is a useful feature -- particularly if a program will be executed over a several year cycle.

Collaboration and handling of Reviews are Jama's strongsuit and one of the major reasons for us to aquire the product. With well over 20 business stakeholder groups for multiple companies and several technical teams, it has yet to fail us even once.

These three topics are clearly the USP of Jama Connect, by bringing collaboration conversation and a review space inside the tool it make it easier and low effort to keep track on the evolution of the workproduct. The traceability features that Jama offers are today state-of-art, nevertheless I believe that the effort required to make sense of the data is very low in comparison with other tools.
There is however the chance to enhance the review center by making available the information given there into the 'normal' workingspace. Also a bit more of automation to guide the reviewers through the workflow of the items and viceversa would be worth improving.

Historically, we used Word documents; which is arguably the worse possible choice for a requirements document but people still cling to the idea. Jama Connect allows us to have a searchable database of requirements and organized reviews but still export Word documents for others. A different department is using Excel for requirements tracking. This seems to work Ok. If we ever abandoned Jama Connect, this is probably what we would go to. Others are also using Doors. I haven't used it in years but when I did, it was very clumsy. It got the work done but was an effort to use it.

My personal experience in other tools like Jama Connect is rather limited, so the main comparison that I have is between Jama Connect and not having a tool for requirements management and traceability. Compared to the use of Microsoft Office (e.g., Word and Excel) to manage requirements and design traceability, Jama Connect is wonderful. There is a great deal of efficiency and elimination of redundancy through the use of Jama Connect as opposed to non-specific documentation tools.
