A fantastic solution for small and medium businesses to quickly get reporting up and customized to your liking
Overall Satisfaction with Looker
I use Looker as a way to analyze web performance over time as well as quickly and easily compare performance monthly across various channels. Every website i manage is setup with Looker with the data coming in automatically and then the insights included for each major call out for easy client viewing.
Pros
- Automation
- API coverage
- Integration of many different data sources
- Customization
- Ease of use
Cons
- Data uptime (portions go out frequently)
- Help articles and resources are lacking
- Learning curve is steep
- Return on time
- Client success
- Decreased time on needless reporting
Compared to Tableau I much prefer Looker. While they both have similar features (Tableau actually has more ability to drill down and edit data from various sources), for a mildly technical user, they're able to set up a report rather quickly and customize it to look a certain way. Every time I've experimented with others, it was a much steeper learning curve.

Looker Feature Ratings
Using Looker
300 - Nearly every member of the SEO team uses Looker Studio... Simply put it's free, so while it may not be the best, there's no dealing with licensing issues, contract renewals, or new members coming from other places that have never used it before... Because it's a simple extension of Google Analytics, it means anyone who's got any amount of analytical background will pick it up fairly quickly.
30 - While it is extremely present across our Org, not very many people know how to support the backend when something breaks. I'd say roughly 10% of people who use it can fix a report when something breaks
- reporting
- analytics
- monitoring
- syncing multiple data points to a single dashboard
- While it's not intended as a reporting tool, it very quickly can become that with a few design edits
- With some bigquery or API knowledge you can leverage data from multiple sources easily
- tracking web changes
- mapping out future projects
Evaluating Looker and Competitors
Yes - We used to use STAT keyword tracking, tableau, and google analytics. Having everyone in one place was a major reason that Looker studio became so prominent, not to mention the free price tag that incentivizes everyone to quickly adopt it.
- Cloud Solutions
- Scalability
- Integration with Other Systems
Since hundreds of members of our agency are in charge of reporting, having a consistent line of reports we send out with familiar design, despite a wide arrange of clients was crucial. While Tableau has all of this, in my opinion it's a harder tool to use and requires more upfront learning that Looker.
I wouldn't change anything as the evaluation process was very straight forward. Just be aware that other tools are better if you're willing to put the front end work in to learning them.
