Use Cases and Deployment Scope

I use Paylocity to process payroll for my small business. I have both W2 employees and service providers who receive a 1099.

Pros and Cons

Pros

Offers a system that I can use on my own and when is convenient
Support has always been helpful if I need to do something differently
Support responds in a timely manner

Cons

The software isn't particularly user friendly - it is difficult to figure out how to do things, so I usually have to ask Support for help.
The payroll process reports don't open in another tab in Chrome; they open in another session of Chrome which is harder to switch back and forth on my MacBook.
Setting up direct deposit requires an extra step to have the first pay period actually deposit. It would be helpful if the default could be that way, and the check box would activate the pre-note or whatever it's called.

Return on Investment

More flexibility to get payroll processed

I prefer the flexibility of Paylocity to Paychex. (I don't remember Flex or PEO; they might not have had those distinctions when I used them over 10 years ago.) I really like doing payroll all by myself when I have time to do it.

Likelihood to Recommend

Paylocity is well-suited for people who are able to navigate software and feel confident about doing so. It's also great for people whose schedules are not static so payroll can be processed at any time within a certain window of days. It's great for small businesses where the owner is doing all of this by themself.

I worked with PayChex previously and I really disliked having a set appointment to call and do payroll. This interfered with vacations and my sporadic schedule. Larger companies with employees and a payroll department might prefer just having to make a phone call and not dealing with figuring out the software.
