Paylocity - If you have a very complex HR and payroll process but otherwise no

Overall Satisfaction with Paylocity

We use Paylocity to pay our salary and commission employees and to track PTO. We use less features than most companies likely do as we do not manage benefits or hiring/firing within the platform, and we have no hourly employees. We moved over from a, theoretically, more manual process of Quickbooks desktop payroll with a separate payroll system used just to track PTO. Paylocity has centralized things for us.

Pros

  • They charge for what you actually need instead of the whole bundle, making it affordable.
  • They were willing to work with us on a unique tax situation that other vendors would not accommodate.
  • Security features are robust. MFA and security questions make me feel like employee's information is secure.

Cons

  • The interface is cumbersome compared to others I have used (i.e. QB Online, Bamboo). It is unintuitive, and much time is spent looking for features. I would equate it to being an Apple user and being handed an Android. No one in our office has liked the interface, and I do mean that literally (30+ people). Like an Android, it does have a lot of capability, maybe more, but in my opinion, it's hard to use.
  • Customer service during implementation has been poor from my experience. We are considering dropping it at the end of the year and cutting our losses.
  • Payroll process is rigid - visibility is poor I feel. I often have to back out of screens to find information, and some functions feel hidden or completely out of reach. Perhaps it is because we are in finance and our employees have more specific requests for withholdings and changes, but adjustments were far easier in Quickbooks Desktop than in Paylocity. So, Payroll takes longer to run, rather than taking less time.
  • Because we had been manually entering pay into our bank's website for payment, I do think over time Paylocity will keep us from making an error occasionally.
  • One of the biggest benefits is having W2's and 1099's generated. Certainly not unique to Paylocity, but we've had to do that manually previously.
  • It has not saved us money. To this point, it is a net negative but not by a lot. A year out, it will be neutral, if we are still using it at that time.
Nothing has been automated.
We have an older and somewhat less tech-savvy employee demographic. It is no fault of Paylocity's at all, but those features simply would never be used in our company.
For a modern payroll system, I expect it to be much more user friendly and intuitive. Most of our office had trouble even getting logged in initially. I am quite tech-savvy, and am frequently frustrated. It is definitely functional in that it does not crash, etc, but it is not streamlined. Some of it may be that I haven't tried harder to customize it, but we're kind of checked out at this point.
Bamboo is significantly better in usability. We had it previously. We only chose to leave because we have a unique unemployment tax situation that Bamboo and QuickBooks Online were both unable to handle.

QuickBooks Online had the advantage of fully integrating our regular accounting with our Payroll, but customer service is terrible. Interface is better than Paylocity, but they wouldn't make needed changes for us.

Do you think Paylocity delivers good value for the price?

Yes

Are you happy with Paylocity's feature set?

Yes

Did Paylocity live up to sales and marketing promises?

Yes

Did implementation of Paylocity go as expected?

No

Would you buy Paylocity again?

No

If you have complex pay types - like shift differentials, overtime, all of the different hourly types, it likely has all of the flexibility needed. We are salary only, making those moot. In general, if you need a lot of complexity and flexibility, it is certainly a good one to look at.

If you do not need that type of customization, you should choose something that has a friendlier interface.
