Overall Satisfaction with Pure Storage FlashArray

I've never ever met a support department that's so easy to communicate with. One downside is that, like dozens of other big vendors, it's impossible for communication to keep being CCed to colleagues, which is highly annoying. I don't know if they've noticed but the year is 2019 and losing the CCed addressees is not of this time. That's the only reason they're not getting 10/10 points.
Ever since we moved to Pure Storage, our performance issues just disappeared overnight. For the first time since, well, ever, the hundreds of VMs we're running all feel as fast as they would on individual hardware with SSDs. It is one of the most remarkable pieces of hardware and software I've ever come across. I didn't believe Pure's consultants on how many TBs we needed, but because they guaranteed they'd give us the difference, we went in anyway. It changed my professional life.

But the good stuff doesn't end there: Their support department is absolutely amazing and very proactive. If there's a release that fixes some updates or just a new general release that is their baseline for a healthy system from now on, they will contact you! Also, they'll contact you if they detect issues on the array of course.

We have an all-flash array from a different vendor as well. With the same amount of SSDs and less than a third of the VMs (and less than a tenth of the user base for this array), it is at least five times slower. We're phasing out almost all other storage in favor of Pure.
  • Performance
  • Support
  • Customer Relations
  • Truth in their message and advertising
  • Education field should get a higher discount. We are unable to increase revenue and can only spend money once
  • Higher capacity drives
  • We don't have a ROI, we're in public education.
I can tell you that we got Pure Storage in our building because one of our sub-schools already had an array and they were ecstatic. It didn't take more than half an hour demo to sell it to us.
  • We've been able to quickly and easily deploy a lot of new servers because of the array.
At first I'd have said it's good for virtual desktop infrastructure, high IOPS, and loads of redundancy, but that has changed to "use it for everything if possible, except maybe video files or storage of large amounts of static data." Unless you sweat, drool or bleed money, don't buy it for stuff like storing videos.

Using Pure Storage FlashArray

125000 - About 125,000 users use services that come from VMs that run on our two Pure arrays.
- Kids (40K)
- Parents (80K)
- Staff (5K)
They represent every imaginable function within society.
About 3 techs handle storage (de)provisioning and device management.
3 - Any tech that can handle storage systems will be able to add this to their catalogue of supported devices.
  • Server virtualization
  • Desktop virtualization
  • End user file system storage
Renewal depends on cost. I'm not the decision maker. If it were up to the techs, we would renew. But it is not up to the techs.

Evaluating Pure Storage FlashArray and Competitors

Yes - EMC Clariion AX4
EMC Clariion VNX-3500

They needed to be replaced/investment cycle.
  • Prior Experience with the Product
Never change a winning team.
I wouldn't change anything. There's nothing wrong with our evaluation and selection process.

Pure Storage FlashArray Implementation

Listen to the experts from Pure!
Not sure - We didn't have a change management process in place at the time so it wasn't a burden. We were building a new network and environment from the ground up.
  • No issues at all.

Quick Initial Response
Our most recent case was a request from our side to upgrade the arrays to the most recent release of Purity (the operating system on our arrays). We planned it, and they came back to us a couple of days later, asking us if it is possible to postpone the upgrade because they might have found an issue in the release code. Engineering was investigating to see if it is actually an issue in the code or maybe misconfiguration. That is the kind of support and quality that I want. Don't be afraid to postpone things/releases if it otherwise breaks (yes Microsoft I mean you).

Using Pure Storage FlashArray

Never had an array that was easier to use.
Relatively simple
Easy to use
Technical support not required
Quick to learn
Feel confident using
  • Everything is just extremely easy. You don't need training as you do with 3PAR just to create a LUN. Go ahead and "play"!
  • We've not encountered any.
