Overall Satisfaction with QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise

Our company uses QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise for all accounting purposes. We use it to create income statements and balance sheets. We use QuickBooks for tax purposes and send a QuickBooks backup file annually to our CPA, allowing them to prepare our tax return. All companies need a way to manage their accounting and track their financial transactions, including both spending and revenue. Our company is a small company of 20 employees in the aerospace defense industry. As a small company, a large ERP system is not necessary. QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise works for our small company. QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise can be used for manufacturing companies, construction companies, or any small business in any industry. Setting up and getting QuickBooks running may require a small advisory service from a professional accountant for a small business start-up or for any small business just beginning to use the accounting software.

Pros

  • Ease of Use compared to competitors. (Still some basic accounting skills required.)
  • Many Reports inluding Financial reports. (Income Statement and Balance Sheet.)
  • Journal Entries.
  • Customer Center.
  • Vendor Center.
  • Purchase Orders.
  • Chart of Accounts.
  • Accounts Payable.
  • Accounts Receivable.

Cons

  • Ease of Use (Takes some skill to set up).
  • Accessibility for non-accountants (Takes some accounting knowledge).
  • Journal Entry Imports (There are options but this should be easier.)
  • Gets the job done.
  • Accounting Necessity.
  • Greater transparency.
  • Accounting foundation.
We have not had too much growth in our company. We have stayed a small 20-employee company. Our sister company has had great growth and used QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise in the past. The sister company has since needed to upgrade to an ERP system that can handle their growth. I would recommend QuickBooks for small to medium-sized companies. At some point, you will most likely need to upgrade to an ERP system when you become a large company.
An advisory accountant was hired to set up our QuickBooks. We haven't had to hire or buy any more advisory services since our setup. I haven't set up QuickBooks from the ground up, but it looks like it would take some work, and I would recommend doing the same thing and hiring a one-time advisory accountant to get your business going. For all future accountants , they will be able to take what your company does and keep going with it. QuickBooks does take some accounting knowledge to use, and even accountants who have never used it before will need some training and time to learn the system.
Once set up, QuickBooks provides valuable insights into your company's past performance. We use our forecasting tools in Excel. I believe there are some forecasting tools in QuickBooks, but they are not particularly effective, and we primarily use QuickBooks to review our past performance.

Would you buy QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise again?

Yes

QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise is a suitable option for companies with 1 to 100 employees. It is an efficient way to keep track of your books for managerial reasons and tax purposes. It is generally the go-to software for accounting. It does take some skill to get things set up and to know what to do for specific accounting transactions. You will most likely need an accountant who knows what they are doing to keep track of your books. Preferably someone or an honest team. For large companies, they will want to consider a comprehensive ERP system that integrates departmental systems.
