Overall Satisfaction with Read&Write
I train staff and students (K-12) on the functions of the Read&Write toolbar. Depending on specific student disabilities, certain features are highlighted. In addition, features are suggested for all staff and students to increase accessibility and to help with preparing materials.
Pros
- Read out loud, the additional voice selection is superb
- Simplify tool is amazing at uncluttering websites and allowing changes in the layout adding the rewordify is extremely helpful for some
- Collect highlight tool is beneficial in note taking
- The word prediction feature is extremely helpful for students who have difficulty spelling and also when typing skills aren't developed yet
- The picture dictionary is extremely helpful for our English learning students as well as teachers who need visuals for students
Cons
- a sticky note option where your own notes could be captured.
- ability to edit the underlying text that sometimes does not read correctly
- I find the "shapes" tool in OrbitNote difficult to use.
- Allows students with barriers to reading & writing to keep pace with peers
- builds independence so there is less reliance on staff
- having a district wide license allows all students to have access to all features
Having access to the same tools regardless of the platform has been extremely helpful for students and staff.
While providing training for students and staff, it is rewarding to see & hear how the features are making a difference with not only our students with disabilities but also all students in general. Staff are finding that there are features that they can benefit from as well as use the tools in instruction.
Early on our district was using Kurweil 3000 but that was restrictive to the computer that it was placed on. We also used co-writer (Don Johnson) for writing supports. By having both features available in one convenient toolbar along with other amazing features that follow the user rather than being stationary is not only cost effective but preferred. Not having to scan and prepare text for reading is a great time saver.
