Slack isn't slack in functionality at all!
Overall Satisfaction with Slack
Slack is used as a major avenue for communication both within and across teams and departments. Slack makes my job much easier because I have immediate access to anyone, whether remote or in the office, that I need to communicate with to do my work. I feel that Slack is a very important tool here.
Pros
- Allows communication to a large audience all at once so many individuals may communicate in a 'conversation'.
- Allows 'direct message', personal communication between individuals.
- Since information is written as opposed to verbally shared, Slack provides a good history of what has been communicated.
Cons
- I find it non-intuitive to attach a file to share with others.
- The 'View Raw' feature is a great feature but I have to go through two steps to 'View Raw' a Snippet. It would nice to just have one step.
- I sometimes have difficulty finding information after I've searched for in the Slack channels. I'm pretty certain it is in Slack but just don't see it in the results.
- I'm a DBA but I can say that I'm sure that I accomplish work much more quickly because of me being able to communicate with the stakeholders via Slack.
- I'm made aware of issues in a more timely manner because of Slack and can, therefore, address them more quickly.
- Brainstorming is facilitated with the use of Slack.
I wasn't involved in the selection of Slack. It was in place as a tool when I arrived at my position, however, I appreciate very much that the decision to use Slack as a major way of communicating in IT was made. If I were in a position where a tool such as Slack was needed, I would choose it every time.
