Overall Satisfaction with Slack
Our whole company uses Slack - each department has its own relevant rooms, along with a few rooms that everyone is a part of. It really helps keep the communications prioritized and relevant, for example I only get email on my company email every other day or so. The instant communication and cross device compatibility is truly a godsend.
- The ability to easily send screen shots of my computer helps make communication much more efficient.
- You can easily create your own Slack Bots.
- Document sharing is very simple.
- Desktop app is a memory drain.
- Should have video chat by this point (03/2016).
- It allows effective communication and collaboration with remote engineers, allowing our company to expand its pool of possible hires.
- For real time conversations, such as during deployments involving multiple people, it is essential to have a real time communication to prevent errors and help fix any bugs introduced quickly and effectively.
- For some of the other teams, there have been reports of misuse of Slack - lots of non-work related 'chatter'.
Google Hangouts has video conferencing which Slack does not have - this is essential for screen sharing (for engineers) as well as meetings with remote engineers, and is something slack does not provide. The chat feature of hangouts does not compare at all compared to Slack for team collaboration however. Slack allows for bot integration (essential for our continuous integration deployments with Jenkins), and an easily navigable app for all direct messages as well as team rooms, unless you are only working with a few people Hangouts can be a nightmare for keeping track of all the different conversations you are in.
