Overall Satisfaction with Slack
I currently have a small team working on my new personal projects, we use slack to communicate about the project and keep everyone in sync on what is required of them.
Pros
- Much more reliable uptime wise than HipChat.
- You may switch from the application to the web client seamlessly
- For a small team, you have the ability to use the free version without harsh restrictions.
Cons
- Normal users find it hard to find users on the same team without knowing their username.
- Would be nice to have more commands from IRC and some shortcut commands from linux such as sed (HipChat has this function which is one of the only pluses for them).
- Having to find the menu that shows what users are online is not best for UX, would be nice if it was out by default and you were able to hide if if need be.
- Unable to change the layout.
- You can go a long way with the free version of slack, the time invested in setting it up is very little so you can hit the ground running rather quickly.
- It has increased the ability to communicate and collaborate with my team with ease.
HipChat would be Slack's biggest competition, Slack has it beat in reliability and set-up time, if only Slack could adopt some of the features HipChat provides, such as the ability to edit typos and change the layout it would be much better.
In my team, I chose Slack over HipChat simply, because it doesn't require as much TLC, you pretty much set it up and go. It's also more cost effective for small companies.
