Overall Satisfaction with Slack

We use Slack as our primary internal messaging platform. It allows our lawyers, paralegals, and staff to communicate quickly and efficiently, without relying solely on email. It helps to reduce email volume by allowing for quick questions and real-time collaboration, and it ensures a more seamless communication when team members are not working in the same room/office. It is our central internal communication tool for day-to-day coordination, deal updates, sharing resources, and building firm culture (for example, sharing announcements, celebrating wins, or organizing social events).

Pros

  • We can create channels by client, deal, or practice group. This makes it easy to catch up quickly if someone was away or needs to reference prior discussions.
  • Search Functionality makes it easy to find past conversations, file links, or instructions.
  • Accessibility Across Devices ensures we can stay connected and respond quickly wherever they are.

Cons

  • While search is helpful, it can sometimes be overwhelming. Results are not always ranked intuitively, and narrowing by date, file type, or conversation can feel clunky.
  • It’s easy to end up with too many channels, making it harder to know where to post or find information.
  • Slack Connect is available, but it’s still not as widely adopted or simple as email when working with external counsel, clients, or counterparties.
  • Slack reduces internal email volume significantly.
  • For fast-moving transactions, Slack accelerates coordination. Instead of waiting on emails or physically walking to the other side of the office to find each other, lawyers and paralegals can respond in real time.
  • Slack channels for announcements, celebrations, and social initiatives contribute to team cohesion and morale, which helps with retention and overall engagement.
I rated Slack 8 out of 10 because it has been an extremely valuable tool for improving internal communication and collaboration at our firm. It reduces email volume, speeds up deal coordination, and helps maintain team culture across offices. However, it is not a perfect fit for all scenarios. For example, it isn’t ideal for formal record-keeping or client-facing communications. With improvements in search, thread visibility, and document handling, it could easily be a 9 or 10.

Do you think Slack delivers good value for the price?

Not sure

Are you happy with Slack's feature set?

Yes

Did Slack live up to sales and marketing promises?

I wasn't involved with the selection/purchase process

Did implementation of Slack go as expected?

I wasn't involved with the implementation phase

Would you buy Slack again?

Yes

As a law firm that focuses on M&A transactions, Slack is well-suited for coordination and quick internal communication and collaboration. Where it is less appropriate, perhaps is for sensitive HR, governance, or confidential client matters, Slack may not provide the same level of formality, security perception, or archival reliability as other systems.
