Overall Satisfaction with Tableau Desktop

We use Tableau Desktop to analyze engagement and ROI for clients, create interactive and aesthetically pleasing custom reports as requested by clients, and to examine various internal queries relating to sales, retention, churn, and lifecycles. Tableau Desktop saves a lot of time and is easier to use than Power BI.

Pros

  • Visualization
  • Interactive dashboards
  • Joining data tables
  • Clear analysis
  • Helpful community knowledge base

Cons

  • Training on calculations could be more 'laymen' friendly
  • Date data is very difficult to scaffold when there are days with no data
  • Included iconography (Shapes) could be much more modern and robust
  • Should be able to truly update all colors/fonts/backgrounds globally in workbook dashboards
  • Retention and lifespan has increased because we're better able to present hard data easily and create recurring engagement reports
  • A lot of time is saved by being able to easily join tables and create ad hoc reports outside of Excel with much more visually appealing output
  • We were able to do some in-depth A/B analysis to prove ROI to clients much more effectively
  • We've saved a lot of money from having to use 3rd party analytics firms due to the accessible nature of Tableau Desktop and abundance of training resources
Overall, Tableau Desktop is very user friendly compared to competitors I've used. There is a not insignificant learning curve for total beginners, but it's manageable and the pieces do fall into place quickly. The drag and drop interface, ability to easily scale through different visualizations of the same data, extensive design customization available, and wealth of training resources are very important. But, as with any massive platforms, there are some frustrations with wonky features that are not intuitive (dashboard scaling, mass changing of design elements, custom Shapes being much too small in the Marks view to see details without adding them to a sheet, and the biggest frustration as a non-developer/data architect -- the language used to explain complicated calculated fields, and the use cases presented, are not true to life and don't use language that is immediately accessible.)
The visualizations are far and away more powerful and it is more user friendly than Power BI. It would take 3-4 times as long to create the types of reports in Excel that I can create in Tableau Desktop and there are a slew of ways I can present the data in Tableau Desktop that I'm not sure Excel is even capable of, or if it is, it would be a very difficult thing to learn (Excel formulas are not nearly as easy to know, rote.)

Do you think Tableau Desktop delivers good value for the price?

Yes

Are you happy with Tableau Desktop's feature set?

Yes

Did Tableau Desktop live up to sales and marketing promises?

Yes

Did implementation of Tableau Desktop go as expected?

Yes

Would you buy Tableau Desktop again?

Yes

Tableau Desktop is very well suited for presenting data in meaningful and interactive ways. The learning curve is a bit steeper than expected for true beginners, but there is bountiful information available online and in their community. It would be helpful if their eLearning used some more in depth, real world examples of data -- as is, it's too clean and not representative of most databases. They would also benefit from having an archive of use cases so you can learn based on use cases as relevant to your needs as possible. For organizations who don't need to expose interactive dashboards to end users and only need to present static reports, it may be overkill. It would be nice if view-only didn't require a license.
