Overall Satisfaction with TeamViewer
Teamviewer is used primarily as a remote assistance tool by members of the IT department. Being relatively simple to install and requiring virtually no configuration, it can quickly be deployed to a remote PC\server for troubleshooting typically where input from another offsite team member is required. While the software has not been deployed across the organization, it is used as a collaboration tool among the members of the IT team in resolving issues where the expertise of the assigned staff may not be sufficient or where travel to the location for all members is not possible.
Pros
- Simple install with virtually no configuration. The application is up and ready to use in minutes.
- Connection is smooth with little to no lag allowing a comfortable viewing experience for remote viewers.
- Works well on both LAN and through the Internet with no additional configuration needed for the application.
- Convenient file transfer feature allowing file sharing among users in a session.
Cons
- Simpler interface for initiating connections would be appreciated. The current interface, specifically for someone not computer savvy, presents a small learning curve which can lead to frustration for the said user.
- The software, at least in my experience, tends to disconnect the session at times. This in itself is not a huge issue, but it does not present a reason for the disconnect. I would like to see, if possible a message indicating why the session was interrupted, e.g inactivity, connection issues etc.
- The application tends to not be backward compatible. From my experience, a newer version is typically unable to connect to a lower version and vice versa. While I understand the reason for this may be to ensure security compliance, it does pose a hassle when connecting to remote PCs\servers and getting a failure due to incompatible versions. The upgrade in itself sometimes results in licensing issues and requiring support intervention.
- The application supports a subscription model which does not always work for everyone. This coupled with somewhat hard to read descriptions of each tier makes it daunting for the average user. I would really like to see a single payment option and an easier to read feature list for each payment tier.
- Due to its ease of use, TeamViewer tends to be the remote access software of choice when dealing with remote clients. This allows an almost immediate response to user issues resulting in increased customer satisfaction.
- As the software allows relatively full remote access it reduces and in some cases removes the need of the technical staff to travel offsite to resolve software issues. This greatly increases their efficiency as it allows more time to be spent of meaningful projects.
- One of the main drawbacks of the software is cost. Having a subscription payment model means that the organization has to pay a recurring amount regardless of use. This eventually results in a business case having to be made on every renewal date as the value of the application is not always realized.
- Skype for Business, WebEx Meetings and UltraViewer
With regards to the above mentioned software, Teamviewer is not free, at least not for business use. This is where UltraViewer comes into light. It is not an instant messaging solution like Skype for Business and has more or less the same features as WebEx. Teamviewer works well as a remote access software with support for a wide range of devices. Its security, ease of install and virtually no configuration became a huge part why it was selected over the others.
