Overall Satisfaction with TriNet

My first experience with Trinet was frustrating because of the two different contacts (payroll specific, and HR) and them never really being available when I needed them. As I learned who to "work with Trinet", it has made my second experience much better, because of my better understanding and the new "one contact approach".
Trinet is used by the whole organization to be able to recruit talent across the US and offer a benefits package (health insurance, 401k...) to employees in many different states. It also simplifies payroll because we don't have to file payroll taxes and withholdings to various tax agencies in different states. It's also great for new hires to enroll online and feel they are well taken care of.

Pros

  • Onboarding of new hires
  • Payroll processing and year end forms (W-2s)
  • Help with choosing new health/dental insurance for open enrollment and deciding company's contributions

Cons

  • Payroll reports are confusing - why are there so many?
  • The way to choose reports for a payroll period. Can't just do "previous payroll", have to go by invoice # and I don't know what period it covers.
  • Didn't like having two contacts (one for payroll, one for HR).
  • Improve employee hiring, satisfaction and retention
  • Make recruiting easier
  • Make sure we are in compliance with employees in 4 different states
Trinet offers real health and dental insurance under their name, not just a broker who can help a small company find a small group coverage ... with 6 employees in 4 different states we could not offer health or dental insurance to our employees, and Trinet had the perfect solution to that problem!
Trinet is well suited for a small company that is doing well (cash flow not an issue) and wishes to attract talented workers with a solid on-boarding and benefits package, to compete with offers from larger companies in the same industry. Potential new hires don't feel they are taking a "risk" by joining that small company, because the payroll and HR are solid.

Evaluating TriNet and Competitors

Yes - Trinet replaced a basic online payroll solution and an individual health dental insurance approach for each employee. We needed to replace this solution because we could not count on new employees to go out on the health insurance market place and find individual coverage when competitors could make them an offer that included insurance.
  • Product Features
  • Prior Experience with the Product
  • Positive Sales Experience with the Vendor
The product features, with the Co-employer set up, were the most important features. It allowed us to hire new employees and offer high end benefits, website, and on -boarding process when we could not have achieved that with less than 5 employees at the time. I also had prior experience with Trinet, and even though the process had been somewhat cumbersome, I had confidence that I could navigate better within Trinet
I don't think I would change the selection process. I contacted the big names in payroll processing who claimed they now offered health insurance and other benefits, but it was not under the co-employer model, and hence didn't really help us out as we had only 4 employees in 4 different states at the time.
