Currently we are using TriNet as our core HRIS and PEO - HR, Payroll, Benefits, Reporting. We also use TriNet for compliance purposes, and are soon to be rolling out TriNet Expenses. Due to the limited functionality, we do not utilize TriNet for a majority of core HR/People functions such as Org Charting, Employee Directory, Performance Management, New Hire Onboarding, Background Checks, or Headcount Planning.

TriNet is useful for small businesses who only have minimal HR, Payroll + Benefit Administration at top of mind. Anything more, and TriNet will fall considerably short of its competitors. A dynamic HRIS with higher functionality around Performance Management, Reporting, Onboarding, Engagement, Org Charting, Employee Directory, etc. is always on my mind as a People leader and administrator. We've had to invest in many non-integrated supplemental technologies in order to fill the gaps that TriNet leaves, and have struggled with their Customer Support model as well.
One of their largest struggles. TriNet does not provide dedicated account representatives or support teams, and instead they rely heavily on a support inbox queue. We've found that responses are slow to come and often contain inconclusive or insufficient detail and information, and at times require several rounds of follow-up and/or clarification to resolve. It is also true that TriNet does not empower Administrators to control a large majority of their account setup and configuration, which necessitates a higher amount of outreach to support.
The user interface is actually terrible - this system is not pretty, it's not user-friendly, and it is not intuitive. It is also true that completing tasks and building reports within the system is neither straightforward or easily navigated. There are often hidden dependencies and/or unclear field titles to content with within the datasets, and it is often a shot in the dark with how something will work. Certain fields and processes are set up in a way that is decoupled or fragmented, and it is nearly impossible to audit/QA.

TriNet allows us to have a lean HR operations team and serve other business functions while remaining HR compliant and providing offerings similar in cost and value to a much larger organization.

Organizations that are small and don't have an existing HR team make TriNet a perfect fit. Employees can speak/chat/email TriNet for direct support. HR leaders with limited resources can be assured all of the corporation's needs around tax withholdings, work comp, wage garnishments and immigration assistance are met and in place reducing company overhead for specialty areas. Having a flat rate associated to cover costs simplifies the accounting process.
Some support is outsourced through Connect360 and they're not as knowledgeable as our direct support team members with TriNet. If our direct team members aren't available, it can take longer to get questions answered.
The platform is very intuitive and easy to access for all levels of users.

They are well suited for larger firms that have people working within their accounting and HR department. Working with a small business, like ours, they lacked the attention we need along with being price-sensitive to that. We kind of felt like second-class situations as our tenure increased with them, hence the switch to Just Works 2 months ago.
The service got worse after they eliminated direct contact with our customer service/account person who was working with us since inception. It was very disappointing. We really enjoyed working with her. She was very responsive. However, they eventually assigned a rep, Patrick, who became more available to direct us where to go when issues arose. He was very good, hence giving an 8 rating. Before him, it was a 5.
The platform was a bit confusing and sometimes took too much time to find the things we needed. The platform we are using at JW is far simpler and a pleasure to navigate.

Originally we signed on with TriNet for two reasons: 1.) We needed a more competitive benefits package to attract talent and 2.) as a small business we were investing too much time in HR-related work that was not income-generating.

  • Originally we had an account representative assigned to us who quickly learned our business and needs. That went away with Connect360. I miss having that direct contact, but the chat function and CRM capabilities have been massively improved.

We recently launched our first family-leave policy. TriNet was instrumental in helping navigate the complexities of this kind of policy and ensuring we had it accurately captured on paper.
Through HR we have comprehensive benefits and a streamlined enrollment process, on-call HR support for employees and for me as the employer.
We have very few improvement opportunities for TriNet other than the app and dedicated customer service rep. The only other area that comes to mind is the hiring portal. We don't find it to be nearly as intuitive as other TriNet systems. Little things like new candidate notifications, and no firewall so you can allow others into parts of the system are somewhat clunky.

  • I recently had an issue where an employee was terminated, then rehired. Upon entering payroll to pay for unpaid wages the employee was owed, the payroll seemed to go through properly. It was only after I was to finalize payroll that it was discovered this employee's hours were changed by TriNet without notifying me first. The payroll was finalized without me being able to address the issue in time. I had to contact customer service immediately. The issue was resolved, but notifying me of a change primary to this becoming an issue would have been ideal. It was stressful. We also had to pay an additional fee to make sure the employee was paid correctly
  • I understand that the portal platform is being enhanced, but the "contacts" section on the website is hard to find. The layout of the portal platform is not attractive and it seems like you really need to hunt for what you're looking for.
  • Customer service upon the first phone call is great, but once the initial problem is introduced, the individual that you spoke to through customer service will contact you again via email with a general email address. If I have to call again, I get another customer service rep who then has to track down the original rep in order to resolve the problem. Having a dedicated rep for a company used to be the norm. Now we are just handed off to anyone, then having to go through many reps just go find the original person who handled the situation in the first place. I would prefer a phone call back from the original person who worked on an issue or at least an email with their personal email address or phone extension. Again, regarding the payroll issue I had this week, I had to talk to a few different reps to make sure the issue was handled on time, and I was originally brought back to the first one I spoke with (via email). Phone calls would have been much more expedient, and TriNet seems to rely heavily on email. It felt pointless for me to continue calling because I would have had to describe the issue again to anyone that answered the call. This is very frustrating.
I love that TriNet provides benefits and payroll services. It freed up a lot of my time in having to deal with benefits questions that I may not necessarily be able to answer and various states' different payroll taxation.
The TriNet team is very friendly. I would recommend a dedicated person to each company that uses TriNet or at least a personal email address and phone extension when having to call back. The customer service rep who originally handled an issue always has to be tracked down. This is such a waste of time. Phone calls back instead of handling everything through email is much more expedient and a better level of service.
The portal needs work. Sometimes it's hard to find what you're looking for and the overall appearance of the website is not attractive. The contacts portion is hidden below and is covered up by a small window that seems to pop up for some reason, and there's no scroll bar on the menu to realize that you need to scroll down to find it. You really have to hunt for it on the admin side.

  • Many benefit plans for employees to choose.
  • Their proprietary HRIS is just a front-end experience. Almost zero customization available, data and reporting were incredibilities limited, functionality was basic as best (quite lacking really), and poor user experience.
  • Benefits were expensive for a PEO and priced based on our group, so there were no "bulk savings" to benefit from.
  • Customer service was sterile and lacking for both administrators and employees.
  • Taxes were inconsistent state by state. Some were your own, some were TriNet. Made is very difficult to manage or even understand our setup.
  • They have mastered making themselves as sticky as possible. The exit process was a nightmare.
Maybe if you are really small, but even then it is concerning as they will make it difficult to exit, so you may be stuck with them for well past when the value scale tips in the other direction.
Some people were helpful, but you had a contact for every different service, so it was difficult to keep track. answers were generic, basic, and often not helpful.
Some areas like the benefits enrollment on the user side weren't bad, but that is about it. Otherwise, we found it out of date, lacking basic functionality, unable to customize at all, and very limiting to our ability to do our role within HR.

TriNet is a good fit for companies that want everything on one platform - payroll, benefits administration, employee information, 401K, onboarding, etc. The pricing model supports comprehensive benefits at a competitive price. TriNet provides updates on labor laws and state legislation through their Connect Weekly newsletter.
Every TriNet client is assigned a Preferred Services Specialist that can work directly with you. Our TriNet Preferred Services Specialist has assisted us with transiting an employee to a K1 member and providing a special tax election for bonus payments. TriNet also offers several on line training courses to help navigate their robust reporting options.
TriNet's online platform is easy to navigate. Their help center providers access to support if needed and their online training is managed well. For employees, their single sign on to the benefit websites is helpful.

TriNet is the PEO we employ. We are a relatively small company with less than 15 employees. Before using TriNet, we outsourced our HR needs to almost five different companies between payroll, employee legal questions, benefits, workers comp insurance, 401k, etc. It has been nice to have all of our HR needs met by one company. It has also allowed our employees greater opportunities with better benefits than we could have provided as a small company.

  • They provided multiple trainings during Covid which was incredibly helpful when everyone was trying to figure out PPP.
  • Their communication and response have gotten much faster.
  • The build a report feature is still limited and doesn't provide as many options as I'd like.
  • Their chat feature is good, but sometimes it takes so long to get to an actual person and past all the automatic robot questions.
I would say TriNet is well suited for smaller companies who want to outsource all of their HR needs under one umbrella and provide their employees with greater benefit options than they would have otherwise. If a company were large enough to have an HR representative, then I don't think it would make sense to also pay for TriNet's services. I'm in the Admin field, but I'm not an HR expert and TriNet has been incredibly patient with all my questions. They've always given me the information I needed to succeed.
Their email responses have gotten much faster in the last year or so. I enjoy using the chat feature. Once I'm speaking to a representative they are helpful and can point me in the right direction.
Some of our employees are older and no one has had a problem using TriNet. It's very user-friendly for all levels.

I used TriNet primarily for HR resources as well as to access my pay stubs, timesheets, W2s, and tax forms. TriNet was the single source for accessing all of these documents in one place and having HR related questions answered. Furthermore, when I moved to a new company, I was still able to log in to TriNet and access my past tax docs and W2s. I loved the fact that all of my information was securely stored whenever I needed to access it in the future.

  • I had to use a separate platform for my 401k account.

TriNet worked best for me whenever I needed to quickly access HR docs for personal and financial use. The site was user-friendly and I rarely ran into glitches. The best part is that it seems to be 100% safe and secured for storing personal information. I only wished that all of the company and employee-related programs were in one place such as Rippling. I would have preferred my 401k access in TriNet as well.
Once upon a time, I needed to access some tax docs and W2s for a previous year. I had trouble logging in or forgot my password, but customer service got back to me in ample time so I could access it. They were very helpful but also ensured that I was indeed who I said I was so no anyone can access my personal info.
The site is user-friendly and navigation is intuitive. However, my rating is solely based upon comparison with other HR platforms such as Rippling. Rippling has the ability to store everything I need in one place as opposed to TriNet where I have to access multiple links to get to where I want.

I don't believe Trinet is well suited for anyone. The non-personal service they are now providing is terrible. They just pass you around to one rep or dept after another with no resolution to problems.

I have worked in tech for almost a decade and in my opinion, TriNet is the worst HR software I've used. I've had to connect with their support chat on 4 instances in my first 2 months of employment. One of these instances was handled professionally and to my satisfaction. The other 3 left me frustrated. Currency conversion should not be an issue for expense reimbursement. Activating benefits should not be an issue. The modal for leaving feedback on how a customer support chat went does not work in my experience, so instead of being able to give feedback that can be actioned, I feel like users need to resort to leaving negative reviews to get attention brought to an issue.
I did have one good experience with TriNet support. However, it was dwarfed by the 3 negative experiences. I would not wish other remote workers to have to deal with the frustration that TriNet causes. There are many other better options out there in my opinion.
There are some UI issues but that is mostly due to poorly presented data in my opinion.

We have employees in the US and Canada, and use the system to manage all of our HR and Payroll needs. We like the ability for the employees to pick the health benefits they want, and also count on TriNet for all of the Vacation Time and other time-off trackings. I use the system frequently.

  • Lock IN Conversion Rate Earlier. It is always a problem when I run the payroll expecting one conversion rate and then find a different conversion rate when the payroll is actually run for Canada.
  • I liked having an assigned person to my account. Debra Ford was amazing, but I know that TriNEt moved to a more decentralized model.
Again, TriNet does a really good job of providing health benefits at a very competitive price. This is the major point that keeps us with TriNet. Running Payroll is fast and efficient. I have very few complaints about anything with TriNet. I also like the TIme Off Tracking feature, but I still need to chase the employees to get their vacation and time-off requests into the system.
I almost never give a 10 on these ratings because there is always something that could be improved upon. As I mentioned earlier I was happier when I had a designated person to work with me when I had issues, but your new system is still okay.
Would like an easier report builder section. I need to track payroll by the state where the employees are located.

Our organization used TriNet as a platform to process payroll for the US staff. The head office is based in Australia as well as the finance team. Being in Australia, the finance team has little knowledge of the payroll requirements in the US. Being with TriNet has helped us to have insight on the US payroll compliances and they are a chat away when assistance is needed. We've been using TriNet to process payroll only.

  • From the administrator's point of view, I don't know what the employees are seeing from their side. Hard to tell new employees what are the steps to take next.
Based in Australia, TriNet has been a source of support in terms of compliances. So they have been able to answer questions when they arise.
They are always prompt and feel satisfied with the assistance provided. Trinet helped with assisting me understand how insurance works for example, or how the form i-9 is to be completed, they point me to where I can find reports on the system.
I don't use all of the features - mainly the payroll entries which are user-friendly. You can easily find how the report works etc.

It allows us to be a truly remote business across 8 States, ensuring we are compliant in each and allowing us to offer proper benefits. Also, it allows us to support other HR functions and post our open positions.

TriNet is well suited for a small company that doesn't have the HR bandwidth nor the ability to offer competitive benefits.
Being in 8 States allows us to track all pertinent information, process payroll, and track time off and expenses. It's fairly user-friendly.
The platform is user-friendly or the CS team does a good job of walking you through things.

We use TriNet for our payroll, benefits, and 401k program. TriNet takes care of administering our benefits, which is a huge help to our company. They also manage our 401k program for our employees. Entering payroll in TriNet is fairly simple. I appreciate the fact that I can call them to get answers to my questions.

TriNet has adopted a less personalized service model, which is something I would like to see change. I rarely speak to the same person twice. My calls are usually answered by someone in the Reno, Nevada call center. To me, it would make more sense to speak to a representative who is in the same state and can answer state-specific questions. I do have to admit that there are times when I get an answer more quickly because I can call in and usually get someone on the phone within a few minutes; however, I wish it were more personal. Maybe a particular team could be assigned to a certain number of clients. That way, we have the possibility of speaking to the same person and developing a relationship with that representative.
As I have stated before, I am not really satisfied with the customer service model TriNet has adopted, but I do like the fact that I am more likely to get an answer to my question usually within the same day. I really don't like talking to a different person each time I call. The payroll approval process is not always the same from pay period to pay period.
TriNet is pretty user-friendly, but there are a few things that could be improved. I have already mentioned the issue I have with Workforce Analytics, so I won't reiterate what I wrote earlier. I do like the free app that I have downloaded to my phone. I mention this to my new hires and encourage them to take advantage of it.

We have a PEO arrangement with TriNet and they manage our payroll and taxes.
  • Timely payroll processing.
  • Basic queries are answered fairly quickly.
  • Escalation matrix is in place.
  • Connect 360 / PreferredSupport does not work as well as a dedicated representative.
  • Proactively communicating changes in payroll and tax compliances specific to each client such as local payroll taxes which they supposedly do not manage
  • Complete payroll and tax management i.e. federal, state, local and any other which may impact their clients
  • Quarterly confirmations on payroll and tax filings in the format requested by the client
They have built trust with clients on their ability to process, report, file and comply with all payroll and tax related regulations. They have been doing so over the years. However, they need to provide an overall suite of services covering complete payroll and tax be it, Country, Regulatory, federal, state, City local, etc.
This was the understanding while signing up. We even had a representative allocated to us for all our queries and received updates and advice as and when there are changes pertaining to payroll or tax laws.
However, there have been misses at their end and they take no accountability for this. The client is expected to be aware of payroll and tax requirements.

The technology platform is very good and multiple reports are available at a click of a button.
However, customer service is poor. Queries have to be escalated and takes 7 to 10 days to get a response from them which would be a make-do response at most times.
We have a PEO arrangement with Trinet. However, you cannot have blind trust on them. Clients will also have to educate themselves on payroll and tax and request for timely updates on new ordinances that may impact them separately or any compliances that would have to be managed at the Client's end.
The software is good and is feature loaded. User interface could be better.

TriNet is our PEO and we use payroll, health benefits, ancillary insurance, and 401k services.

TriNet was exceptionally good at onboarding and the team was friendly and extremely competent. Their systems for routine tasks are easy to use and efficient. The renewal was extremely efficient. However, they are slow and unresponsive to tasks outside the norm. They need repeated reminding and it doesn't appear that they know who should be responsible for the reply.
The onboarding team was first-rate. Routine tasks are easily managed through the system, but exceptions which aren't available through the system are hard to deal with. No one takes charge.
For the most part, it's a solid system. The past two years with Covid have challenged the concept of normal and TriNet is not particularly well suited to deal with exceptions.

  • Ideally offer timekeeping system as part of Trinet, instead of TPA where systems do not communicate with each other.
  • Fortunately, we continue with our assigned representative and not relying solely on Connect360 resource where you speak with a different person each time.
Our company remains with TriNet because we feel they are well suited to meet our needs as we continue to grow from 50 employees to 200 over the past few years. One concern recently is that we have a different Benefit contact person working with us on annual renewals where they are not familiar with our history, process, or account and it is cumbersome to start with someone new each time.
While we have various resources for customer service, including our direct point of contact, Connect 360, or our Account Manager, it is at times frustrating that responses to escalated cases can take up to 5-7 work days to get response or action completed.
While I find the system easy to use, I don't always find it intuitive. For example when typing key words in the HELP tab, many times nothing shows up. I'm not certain if I'm not using the exact words that TriNet has in the HELP section, or if this implies there is no information to HELP me.

TriNet automates our payroll, benefits, and leave administration HR needs. This frees me up to focus on coaching and recruiting employees. They provide timely guidance on HR situations and make employees more empowered to view and manage parts of their own HR journey. Additionally, their webinars and learning offerings make a great perk for my team. While I could do my job without a partner like TriNet, it would not be as easy or as seamless.
  • HR Guidance, including parental leave and medical leave.
  • Payroll administration.
  • Benefit election and practical advice for employees on their choices.
  • They have struggled during the move to remote due to Covid 19, but are getting there as an organization.
  • More communication across departments or in their internal systems.
  • Bring back dedicated account managers. I like building that one on one relationship.
I can't think of where it is less appropriate. If you have a business and want to have a company handle payroll, hr, and benefits then they are absolutely an amazing partner in all of that. Especially as a smaller seed round startup, we save time and money not having to hire two or three people to manage this all in-house. I cannot say enough positive things about them.
Quick and responsive they have assisted us in a medical leave situation, two maternity leaves, and multiple small HR challenges. The people I have spoken to have been knowledgeable, kind, and flexible.
Intuitive and easy-to-use tool, and a friendly support team for those rare instances where one of my employees needs some hand-holding. This saves me time and energy training people on the platform.

The team assigned to us is amazing.
