Overall Satisfaction with WooCommerce

We use Woocommerce for running our online store to allow our customers to buy items and pay via credit card. The platform is setup to display 50+ products with varying level of options to customise the order such as size, colour, style. The platform is setup to link with our Stripe account which allows for instant payment processing.

Pros

  • Integration with payment gateways such as stripe, paypal and authorize.net
  • Sending automated emails to customers with order details and shipping updates
  • Providing order, product and customer analytics
  • Displaying multiple product types
  • Organising products into relevant categories
  • Setting up different tax bands for purchases from varying countries

Cons

  • Frontend customisation without coding knowledge
  • Customising automated emails
  • Improved checkout experience
  • We have seen significant revenue come through our store with virtually no technical issues arising since launch
  • Store has been cost effective to maintain and there has been very little hidden fees
  • Very strong conversion rates on our stores which ranged from 1.5% to 4% at peak times
Getting setup and started is very easy. The software guides you through the process and they provide lots of modules to add functionality. Customising the platform does require more knowledge of the codebase but is still very flexible with the right technical resources working on it.
From a functional perspective this can do everything that the others can do and for many developers it is the preferred platform for online stores that require a high level of customisation. It is an open source platform with a strong community of developers behind it who have created many third party solutions to enhance the capabilities of the platform. While this community is also present with other ecom platforms the costs associated with increasing capabilities is often a lot more expensive.

Woocommerce is a great ecommerce platform for big and small businesses. It provides everything needed to get started and if you have some developer experience or support it is also possible to customise the setup to tailor the configuration to specific business needs. Woocommerce can be suitable for small local stores or large multinational companies however I'd always recommend working with a developer on large stores

Evaluating WooCommerce and Competitors

  • Scalability
  • Integration with Other Systems
  • Ease of Use
The options to adapt and integrate to work with other tech platforms meant that we could start small and then link to existing systems as we scaled to help manage the increased flow of orders.
Work with developers who can identify the full range of addons required to get the store to the level of professionalism that we wanted. We were able to get there it just might have been more efficient to plan the full tech stack before starting out with development.

Configuring WooCommerce

It can be complex without a developer who is familiar with php, wordpress and e-commerce systems. Once you have the right team anything is possible
Always test in staging and where possible don't reinvent the wheel with custom solutions.

Invest in good hosting and use official plugins for a reliable setup
Some - we have done small customizations to the interface - We used a 3rd party plugin to full customise the checkout experience and align with best practices established by other well known e-commerce platforms.
Some - we have added small pieces of custom code - This required multiple rounds of testing to check in sandbox and then staging with integrations and then finally in the production site with full integrations in place.
Linking to our finance platform really helped with reconciliation of orders and ensuring that the site was always functioning as intended.
