Overall Satisfaction with WP Engine

WPEngine supports the hosting of over 7,000 sites for a variety of law firms in the United States for our company. WPEngine allows us to concentrate on design and digital marketing while they handle the management of the WordPress service for us. This includes the hardware and the WordPress install itself as they handle major, minor, and security upgrades to WordPress. In addition, they have an expert technician dedicated to our enterprise account that not only assists in the debugging of core WordPress issues but has been invaluable in debugging issues in plugins we have implemented and issues in our code performance.
  • Dedicated support
  • Innovation
  • Isolated Enterprise Hardware Environments
  • Does not have a secured key solution on their server
  • Not all portal features have API's to allow for automation
  • Support/Uptime
  • Flexibility in hosting solutions depending on size of Install
  • Integrated APM with New Relic
  • Dedicated Technical Account Manager for Enterprise
  • Reduced need to maintain owned Data Center
  • Allowed for reduction in support staff due to WPEngine expertise and support system
For Acquia and AEM the major differentiator was the cost for WPEngine was significantly lower and we could use the more common WordPress CMS. AEM is better for large marketing sites that integrate with the Abobe Marketing Cloud and we didn't feel we could support Drupal on Acquia.

AWS EC2 is a viable option if you are going to self support and maintain your own WordPress experts. We felt that the value from WPEngine was they handled the support and the WordPress security patches and knowledge beyond simple theme usage.

Pantheon was the closest in matching but we felt with our large installs that the hosting model for WPEngine was more cost-effective than the Container architecture for Pantheon.

I am an enterprise user of WordPress and host over 7000 sites with WPEngine. Areas that I think they are well suited for include customers that need enterprise-level support and uptime and have more complex needs than a simple blog. They also manage scale well with a variety of isolated install options that you can scale up or down depending on your contract needs. They also provide premier support for enterprises and have highly knowledgable Technical Account Managers that provide a significant value add. If I were to look at where it isn't as appropriate for usage I would focus on the low-end needs and say while they do support small sites, there are options out there for cheaper hosting that lack the support a WPEngine gives you.
