Overall Satisfaction with Xero

We use Xero for all our accountancy purposes, except payroll. It allows us to manage our invoices, reconcile with the bank accounts, log all our receipts and it produces our end of year accounts, as well as files our VAT returns quarterly. We also use it to view reports such as profit and loss.

Pros

  • VAT Return
  • Bank Reconciliation
  • Reports

Cons

  • Invoices
  • Payments (Clients Paying Invoices)
  • Managing Employees Holiday
  • Reduced Errors
  • Time Saved
  • Good Record Keeping (Can Find Historical Data)
  • Helps with the end of year accounts
It's pretty useable. It used to have a bit of a clunky interface but they have been slowly updating that interface over time and you can tell the difference. Sometimes it is hard to marry up words on Xero with words HMRC uses when you need to do something important but to do simple things, it's fairly straight forward.
We love cloud software - it keeps itself up to date, it's available anywhere on any device and all the data is synced. We'd struggle to have it any other way in terms of efficiency.
I think Xero has a decent API which makes it decent for integration, although you have to have developer knowledge to do that. That being said, it seems to be available in all vibe coding programs and lots of programs have their own integration with it so it's not a problem on the ground.
We prefer Zoho Invoice for doing the actual invoices to send to clients as we don't like the Xero interface and client side experience (we can customise the invoices and emails in Zoho) but Zoho Invoice doesn't have all the accountancy features that Xero has so we use both.

Did implementation of Xero go as expected?

Would you buy Xero again?

Yes

Xero is well suited to most small businesses, from the very small (but who have outgrown maybe a spreadsheet situation) to the quite large. it is maybe overkill for a sole trader with a small turnover but when the changes for reporting tax come in, Xero will be very valuable to nearly everyone as it can handle the submitting of information to HMRC.
