ActiveCollab

Scenarios where ActiveCollab works well1) ActiveCollab works well for small teams specifically T&M teams. Its invoicing feature is unique & can make your life easy.2) It is very easy to use & posses good range of filters like on the task list, we can drag/drop tasks, Filter by assignee's,
tasks lists, due dates, or completed tasks. 3) It has some simple but awesome features like when you're in
the middle of writing something i.e a comment on story and get interrupted,
it retains what you wrote.4) It allows you to tag team members in threads of comments to grab their attention, its really needed when teams are distributed. Thus helping team members to collaborate easily & stay on same page.5) It integrates pretty well with other web apps like quickbooks , Slack, Trello, HubSpot, Zapier etcScenarios where ActiveCollab did not work well1) Tasks can not have multiple assignee's here so if two members are working on same task it did not allow you to reflect that.2) Sorting capability is not their under invoicing3) It did not work well for larger teams4) Search option is not very detailed & you may end up wasting lot of time searching one particular bug or issue.

Microsoft Project

Complex multi-step, multi-year projects. It also works well for shorter project programs. The cloud functionality via MS Office 365 is very good and is frequently updated. However, the stand-alone and/or server-based programs are infrequently updated providing this group of users at a disadvantage to others.

Pros

  • Project Management - Makes it very efficient to manage projects using Gantt Charts, daily email reports and custom reports!
  • Collaboration - Allows to collaborate with team members, tag them in tasks, send files/attachments.
  • Task delegation - With just 2 clicks you can delegate tasks to other team members/users.

  • I love how easy it is to plot milestones and tasks, and who is responsible for those tasks. Being able to quickly see the scope of work, start and finish dates, along with the resources scheduled to perform those tasks, is such a time and productivity saver.
  • Changes to the project due to scope or duration due to lack of resources are easy to make with Project. I can easily adjust my schedule, add new tasks, and move milestones and finish dates with ease.
  • The reporting tools are great. I can see what percentage of milestones have been completed in real time and share that with sponsors and management.

Cons

  • It does not provide support to scaled agile frameworks like SAfe which is there for Rally & Agilecraft.

  • better built in Visualization capability like One Pager offers as an add on
  • sometimes it feels the software is too big and complex to manage really simple projects
  • There are not many choices of nice icons to use

It's so easy to use and I'm able to make it look however I want it to. It allows me to communicate to my team on exactly what needs to be done and when.

Self-directed help is usually just frustrating. Help Desks don't seem to be knowledgeable enough to provide good answers. There doesn't appear to be a way to get immediate help without great expense.

Alternatives Considered

Since we moved from fixed capacity project to T&M we need some tool who support our billing & invoicing.HP ALM did not provide good support for invoicing so we moved out from HP ALM to ActiveCollab. The features like Timer, reminders are not available in other project management tools like JIRA, Rally & ALM making AC the first choice since we have strict SLA's & AC helps in meeting that.

Microsoft Project (online version) gives you the chance to do native collaboration using other Microsoft Tools and gather around with all the resources available in your company to set up communications standards, commitments and quality assurance guidelines, and most of all to turn up the heat on the pace of each target to conquer within the project management landscape.
