Adobe Experience Manager

If you have a number of smaller parts of your organization that you want to maintain the same look & feel as the rest of the organization, it is easy to create a base site and then let them customize. Also, if you have contributors of content who are not involved in the web site maintenance - our professors, for example - they can enter the text on a basic page which is then incorporated through tagging

Wix

Wix is great if you have a great eye for design and are trying to build a beautiful, unique site. It is not great for multi-page sites, as it is hard to create cohesion across the pages, and the universal settings are not great. If you think you may want to make extreme changes to your site at a later time, I would recommend Squarespace, which is less custom but more manageable for large updates.

Pros

Adobe Experience Manager

  • Manages web content with an intuitive WYSIWYG authoring experience.
  • Manages Digital Assets used by your website such as images, audio, documents, etc.
  • Creates an simple easy to use experience to generate web content. Centers all web content generation around the author.

  • Wix has a variety of plug-ins including, galleries, forums, chat, blogging, Instagram, counter, PDF viewer, and many more.
  • Wix is also connected with a large variety of third-party apps that can be used such as chatbot, contact form, Eventbrite, and Event Viewer.

Cons

Adobe Experience Manager

  • Searching for and organizing images can be a clunky experience.
  • Standard components frequently do not meet our needs. New components must constantly be in production to run what I usually consider pretty standard functionality.
  • Steep learning curve for people not used to web design or development. Not intuitive at all levels.

Wix

  • Since the website builder utilizes a drag and drop system, it can take a bit longer to load your page. It's a good idea to adjust the size of any photos or media that is inserted to help alleviate this problem.
  • We signed up during a promotional period. Our contract has not expired yet but I am nervous that the prices take quite a jump after the initial contract period.
  • There is great customer service but not a lot of help available online. I would like to see better help manuals.

We had and still have a fantastic experience using Adobe CQ. Lots of flexibility, great integration with other Adobe products we already use and a powerful technology make it a great fit for our corporate environment. Also as the community grows, it makes it easier to network with other developers and users to get new ideas on how to continue to get the best out of the software.

We will definitely renew Wix. The ability to completely control our website has been invaluable to us. We will maintain this service as long as we are an incorporated organization, we've tried several other software options and this has been the best solution by far for all of our needs.

I personally feel that AEM is very intuitive to use from an authoring standpoint. The entire CMS was engineered around the author. Everything about AEM is geared to helping authors generate and maintain content. There are ways that tool tips can be customized so that any individual could simply hover over and be guided step by step on how to author web content

Wix is quite easy especially if you use pre-made templates. Getting into the advanced editor can be trickier but still much easier than manual site-building.

Implementation

Adobe Experience Manager

Adobe Experience Manager 8.7

Depending on your individual needs, It is really quite simple to create an authoring experience for a website that looks really good. I have been part of many implementations and many teams and have seen many projects that were super successful and others that were not implemented well. AEM has room for a lot of flexibility in the implementation process compared to other CMS like SharePoint

Alternatives Considered

Adobe Experience Manager

Have used a handful of other content management systems, all of which tend to be either proprietary or freeware -- and the latter presents a security issue. Adobe Experience Manager is easily the most feature-rich content management system I have used, but more features sometimes comes with inconveniences -- taking longer to load when accessing remotely (times out on slow Internet connections), slower taxonomy tagging, etc. It is also the most well-supported system I have used; Adobe is more responsive than most if glitches happen or in response to changes in Google practices for SEO, etc

Squarespace felt more advanced when I first began my comparison research. It seemed like it could potentially make the best looking websites but required a little more base knowledge or a higher learning curve for someone new to web design. Weebly seemed like a very worthy competitor but I enjoyed the Wix interface more so I went with Wix. Now that I have been exposed to Wix for a longer period of time, I actually would be very interested to try both Weebly and Squarespace again to see how they stack up now.

Return on Investment

Adobe Experience Manager

  • We have a lot of work for AEM, it's very popular currently
  • Clients seem very happy with AEM, mostly when they are not assisting in development
  • Overall a lot of work has been won because of our AEM expertise

Wix

  • It has helped provide more of a return by helping our agents be more efficient.
  • There was no cost to set up the site to test with the agents.
  • It has allowed us to handle more customer due to the site cutting down on call times.
