Amazon SES

While most companies can get away with stock or lightly modified SaaS solutions, if email is absolutely core to your business, I'd recommend Amazon's Simple Email Service. It provides the lowest pricing outside of building up your own sender reputation, while providing the same flexibility and performance, especially if your application servers are already in AWS.
The drawback to all this power is that you need to dedicate engineering resources to building, modifying, and maintaining your email pipeline. If you can't justify those expenses, go with a SaaS product.

SendPulse

If you have a problem with open rates, or maybe your database is not so responsive, Sendpulse is the best solution.

Pros

  • Higher deliverability
  • Higher reputation
  • Easy setup

  • Email - all basic and advanced email marketing features (editor, templates, A/B testing, open-rate optimization and more).
  • SMS - that's a good addition to any direct marketing campaign. We use texting campaigns when we run local offers.
  • Push Notifications - it's totally free at SendPulse and that's a big plus.
  • Fast approval - of subscriber lists, send-from addresses, etc.

Cons

  • SES knowledge to setup
  • Email marketing background to keep the lists with very low bounces and complaints
Luis Escoffié profile photo
  • Support - sometimes it could be quicker (not better, but quicker).
  • Green interface - I don't think this color looks good for this type of software.
  • Content - I would like to see more researches and serious email marketing content.

I find that overall SendPulse is very intuitive to use and the support is there to help you out in case you don't find how to do what you wish to do. The drag and drop functionalities make it easy to create the newsletters you want. Every field is explained and small tutorials are included to show you how to create a new template, newsletter, etc. which makes it very easy to use.

Every time I contacted the support team with a question or a problem, they were very fast in replying and helping me out solve it. Usually latest within 10 minutes I would receive a first answer, and the problem would get solved on the same day.

When implementing SendPulse, it is a good idea to have a transition phase where you still use both systems, in case anything goes wrong.

Alternatives Considered

The process of setting up Amazon was really easy and straightforward compared to Mandrill.
And right now Mandrill is an add-on in MailChimp, so no longer a real alternative.
Luis Escoffié profile photo
For me, it was the obvious choice if we compared SendPulse and MailChimp/MailerLite/AWeber. Some of the competitors don't have SMS/push features, some are too simple (MailerLite), some are too complex or not so intuitive. I always preferred more all-in-one tools, because usually, these are more cost-effective. I use MailChimp and MailerLite almost on a daily basis, but SendPulse is my number one tool.

Return on Investment

  • Email marketing has better ROI than social media marketing
  • At least 3x ROI
Luis Escoffié profile photo
  • Good ROI
  • Frees up more time for the employees in the office
  • More leads coming in
