Articulate 360

Articulate 360 is great if you are looking for a comprehensive suite of tools to help with a wide variety of e-learning needs. However, if you are an existing SL user, and do not have need for Articulate Studio (Presenter, Engage, Quizmaker), then this may be a bit more expensive than what you need. The addition of the new tools is great, but it may not meet the needs of small teams/organizations that are heavily focused on controlling costs. Hopefully they'll offer different tiers or bundles with other payment options in the future.

Pros

  • You have the ability to create a variety of courses easily with the vast array of tools provided.
  • The asset library is extremely handy.
  • The pre-made templates make the creation process for new instructional designers extremely easy.

  • Blackboard is very detailed. It has all the bells and whistles anyone can ask for in a Learning Management system. Especially for the instructor. Features like the retention center keeps the instructors engaged and helps students who may need a little extra attention.
  • Blackboard is very easy for the students and the instructors to use. There are a lot of training materials developed by Blackboard (and by other schools), including written manuals and videos that students and instructors can watch.
  • Blackboard has a lot extra features in modules that can be downloaded and installed by the administrator that can make your instance unique to any other school.
  • Blackboard is very helpful and quick to provide a solution when there is an issue. The technical support is fantastic and are always willing to help you with any issue.

Cons

  • The price is a little high.
  • I would prefer an option not to purchase some of the the features of 360 as I simply would not use them.
  • The update to Storyline is not a large one, I was hoping for more for its release.

  • One major flaw in Blackboard Learn is their Software Updates module. This module is supposed to allow hosted customers, such as ourselves, to be able to apply updates to the software on our own time. Unfortunately, almost every update has this disclaimer: "Managed Hosting clients should create a case on Behind the Blackboard to schedule the recommended server restarts after Building Blocks are updated. To expedite the scheduling process, please include a desired day and time for the restarts to begin." The Software Updates module is pointless if we can't run those updates ourselves.
  • There are little issues that pop up on occasion, such as template colors on new courses occasionally not being set correctly and odd error messages that could be a bit more detailed, but all in all, the application has been very bug free for us since we moved to Managed Hosting (Blackboard's hosting service) in 2013.
  • Blackboards mobile applications are fairly bare-boned and don't offer anything more than what you can get via a mobile web browser.

There are several aspects of Desire2Learn that outweigh the benefits of using Blackboard. I find that the Desire2Learn system is a bit more user friendly and looks more up-to-date. However, the decision to renew systems is not up to me because the entire University uses the same system. Regardless, I think I would choose Desire2Learn over Blackboard because of its improved user interface.

Blackboard is very easy to use. A handful of faculty struggle with the Grade Center, but overall, there is very little support needs for day to day Blackboard usage.

The majority of tickets are answered and resolved quickly, but every once in a while a ticket gets "escalated" and then the next tier of support is much slower in following up.

Blackboard's Managed Hosting was top-notch in getting us up and running quickly.

Alternatives Considered

I have already touched on this significantly, but 360 obviously is much more expensive and doesn't handle complex equations as well as Captivate. Otherwise, I think the software is more user friendly and offers better support and troubleshooting. The two softwares are very similar when it comes to the types of things you can create. I do think it takes me significantly less time to build pieces in 360 than in Captivate and that times savings adds up quickly.

While not involved in the selection process, I have used other learning management systems at other institutions. Blackboard is robust and very easy for both students and faculty to use. Whenever I have been involved in choosing a LMS, Blackboard usually comes in first or second. I'm generally happy with it

Return on Investment

  • I can't really speak to this yet as we have just started using it. That said, other Articulate products have helped us to "wow" our clients (faculty) and have allowed us to gain their trust. Because of the assets we can create for their courses, they begin to trust us and let us in to do some of the less flashy work, that often has a bigger impact on their course design and student learning.

  • We recently worked with Blackboard to upgrade our system which is seriously reduced our unscheduled downtime.
  • It allows us to create a model for online learning that is clear, consistent and compliant so that we can accomplish our mission of offering students quality education.
