Considered Both Products
Avanan
Chose Avanan
We felt that Avanan was a better solution with easier implementation and better cloud management. Liked the fact that Avanan uses an API versus a gateway, for more direct access to the Gmail and Drive, even after the delivery.
Chose Avanan
Avanan is better than Mimecast as it secures the inbox right at the user level and protects against all external email threats. Mimecast is a better marketing company but feature to feature Avanan is a better solution and delivers better results than Mimecast any day
Chose Avanan
Comparing Avanan to the competitors listed above, I think Mimecast would be the only real threat to accurately detecting and quarantining phishing and malware attempts as well as ransomware. With the advanced API, Avanan has an extremely high chance of catching things that …
Chose Avanan
We believe Avanan's API-based solution is more effective than the traditional Secure Email Gateways for controlling malicious emails. The solution does not require any change of MX records and is hidden from the Internet. Pulling unwanted email messages from multiple mailboxes …
Chose Avanan
Avanan provides a nonstop service, which I really appreciate, as the other providers did not. This is really important to me because otherwise, emails wouldn't be able to go through. Avanan was easy to deploy and manage, and overall, it is a great product that I highly …

What it says, it provides. It has the Data leak prevention that is the major help while we have to deal with lot of clients at a time. It has the Secure Click that checks any embedded hyperlink so that when we work on emails we don't have to worry about the hidden security threats inside a email.

Mimecast
Mimecast has been great at filtering our email for spam, phishing attempts, and potentially dangerous email attachments. We have been very happy with the reliability of the Mimecast services - I don't remember it being down in 2 years of using the service. My one complaint is that the admin console is not very easy to navigate, which makes some of the services difficult to implement. That being said, their support team has been great about walking us through these issues.

Pros
Check Point Software Technologies
  • The dashboard for Avanan makes all of the most important information easy to digest.
  • Alerting - specifically, the Geo-Location alerts allow us to see if a user has possibly been compromised.
  • The End-User Email Quarantine experience gives users the ability to request emails be released, which trains them to better spot legitimate emails.

  • SPAM management - allows us to prevent SPAM and Phishing attacks with custom policies that fit our organizational needs
  • URL protection - allows incoming emails with a URL to be scanned and protects our end-users from clicking on malicious URLs

Cons
Check Point Software Technologies

  • The Admin Management console is absurdly complicated. For every first time we wanted to setup we've had to call their support for assistance. Support is quick and fantastic but it's so difficult to do anything yourself. They seem to have gone out of their way to call features unique things instead of using standard language from other providers so you as an IT professional know what you're looking for to setup.
  • They have lots of KB articles, which their support will point you to. They are written on the most basic level and don't actually provide the help you need. For example, the KB page will tell you the list of options on the page... but not actually tell you what you do, why you might use them, or define their terminology.
  • Their email threat management system has several nice features. One of the features available is that it will rewrite links in emails so that users click the link and it sandboxes the link, testing it on their server space and the user sees it there. This means the actual link in the email gets changed to the address of one of their servers. As a law firm, the EXACT LINKS are important to maintain in our communications and editing actual data from our clients to point to a Mimecast server is an unacceptable practice. I wish they had an alternative that did not edit the link itself on the page.

Check Point Software Technologies
Cost, need to make sure the cost is competitive for how many users are using email protection as we move users to MS Teams and don't rely so much on full access to email accounts (both sending and receiving internal and external).

Usability
Check Point Software Technologies
The end-users love not having their inboxes fill up with extra useless emails. As an administrator, it is simple to implement and maintain. The ability to put something into test mode before going live makes our life a lot easier and less stressful. Avanan has many different components to make your life easier.

Support Rating
Check Point Software Technologies
Support has always been there for me, they take on suggestions and product improvements quite seriously. I've spoken to techs and you can tell that they care about the product and the service in which they deliver. Avanan support is always responsive in everything I throw them and in most cases they don't tell me how to build out a widget or custom query, they actually do it for me and send it to me.

When calling them you get best in the world customer services but as previously mentioned their online community and capabilities are a bit lacking. They want you to log into their portal to see updates on issues (vs. using a public facing service) and I rarely find the answers to my issues in electronic format. Their online presence is only helpful with the simplest of issues.

Alternatives Considered

Avanan has a one-click solution, which subscribers or clients use to deploy a new security update. Further, Avanan has the protection of any cloud application, which means, it bypasses any security threat and maintain the set safety processes. Finally, data leakage is a shield that Avanan has deployed, a very smooth process in the firm.

Previously we have only used the default on-premise exchange that comes with SBS. This was very simple and only provided basic filtering of spam and junk mail. We weren't able to filter impersonation mail or emails with malicious code

  • Positive - It's hard to put a dollar amount on prevention, but we have been saved many times by the email and URL security filter. Users have clicked on links which were blocked by Mimecast. We have avoided costly ransomware and virus situations many times because of this.
  • Cost savings - Mimecast has worked with us to set reasonable prices, especially because we are a non-profit. At the time of purchase they were significantly cheaper than their closest competitor (Proofpoint).
  • Subscription cost. This is a subscription product so overall it can be more expensive than an on-premise solution. However we feel that the cost was well worth the security benefits.
