The competitors offer a cloud solution, but in more of a clouded document management way. There is no way to live edit files with Carbonite Safe. Dropbox and OneDrive offer you the ability to open the file and use it from the cloud.
Chose Carbonite by OpenText
Ease of use. Carbonite Safe is superior when it comes to this. Again customer service. You can not beat their staff or technicians.
Chose Carbonite by OpenText
Carbonite Safe is the only one that I know of that is autonomous. The other solutions require the user to place things in a certain spot or to copy it manually. Carbonite Safe is "set it and forget it".

We use Easus backup as our on site backup solution. Carbonite is definitely in line with what the industry is offering, with the added reliability of multiple offsite storage locations. I am not sure of a company with as good a reputation.

As the Carbonite Server Backup tool is one of the best among all backup tools in the market, we like to opt it for several customers. It's very user friendly and most reliable. Deployment part and support is also good.

We migrated from NetBackup as we wanted to get rid of our Tape library and media used. We also compared with Veeam to replace the Carbonite server backup. We changed our plan, as we needed storage. It is not in our budget. We continued with Carbonite as they are cheaper in …

I prefer code42's admin console, it was cleaner, more responsive, and easier to navigate. The backup system was very similar.

We originally used a backup product from Microsoft. It was so glitchy and difficult to set up. We spent a lot of time on the phone with their tech team trying to get it to work. They would come up with different reasons and fixes but in the end, it couldn't do the job so we …

Carbonite Safe is a great solution for startup entities. It ranks nicely with Acronis and Carbonite Server Backup. Carbonite Safe is very good for backing up workstations including home computers. This is a good solution for home office users. Acronis does image level backups …

We use Mozy in this client setting because he was more familiar with the user interface and workflow than the other products.

Amazon Cloud Drive deleted TONS of photos I backed up years ago. I'll never trust it again. I liked Dropbox better than Box b/c of its interface and intuitiveness. Google Drive is easy but doesn't back up automatically.
Chose Carbonite by OpenText
EVault came back as a solid choice, without the added cost of retrieving our data in the event of the emergency.
Chose Carbonite by OpenText
We used Symantec before EVault and our backups were large and took a long time. We were not confident in incremental backups given the amount of data we have, so we needed something that would take a backup and then only grab the changes. Carbonite EVault does that for us.

Product was in place before I started working here. It works well for us because the cost was low and it supported our applications and operating systems. We will be evaluating backup and recovery within 12 months to see if EVault is still the best product for us.

Mozy Pro is a great product for entry level and small businesses. It provides simple, effective backups with little to no technical expertise being required by the end users to benefit from it. I found that Code42's CrashPlan, was better when our storage needs increased …

Chose Datto SIRIS
Datto seemed to be better than other vendors I trialed, and I inherited an Alto device, so it was easy to stay with them. I also assumed the backups had been working with the previous contractor, but it turns out they had been failing for months and no one knew it.

Datto is far and away the best backup vendor we have ever used. The product works extremely well, and is very easy to implement and manage.

These may have carved out a niche in one area or another that make them superior for that specific case, but no one does a better overall job. I would estimate that a Datto box will be the right fit for at least 85% of the SMB's in the US.

Very affordable. I used another service known as Naverisk and dropped them as they were more expensive and the service was not as good. Datto is designed for IT consultants so teams are getting a well-designed platform.

Chose Datto SIRIS
Datto beats Replibit hands down, but the software isn't the biggest differentiator. Support at Datto is FANTASTIC. eFolder hardly provides anything you can call support.
Chose Datto SIRIS
The customer to whom I am consulting selected Datto for reasons unbeknownst to me. Had I been involved earlier in the decision process, I would likely have recommended Unitrends, Zerto or another solution.
Chose Datto SIRIS
Datto seems much more reliable with better backup success rates. It is easy to use and cost-effective way to backup small data sets. Support is quite good and they have a very good Kbase.

Mozy Pro is a great fit, especially for small businesses that don't want to pursue a very large number of licenses, and don't have many TB of data to backup. The price per user is reasonable, and well within the budget of smaller businesses needing workstation backup solutions. For larger enterprises, there are other products that provide a lot more storage and better performance. We found Code42's product to be better for larger data backup needs.

Datto works well for smaller shops that just need something that will work without needing a great deal of day to day work on it. I only login to the device periodically to see where we stand on space and occasionally when we need to restore something. The offsite datacenter backup which is hosted by Datto works well for us particularly as we do not have our own offsite tech to use. In larger departments other solutions will possibly win out based on required features and setups but for the 1-10 man IT departments the Datto solutions fit in well.

Pros
  • Performance Settings: Mozy can be configured to run very smoothly in the background with minimal performance degradation. It provides network bandwidth throttling, backup speed, and backing up only when idle option. From my own experience I usually do not notice any performance degradation when Mozy is running. Of course a good network or Internet connection is vital.
  • Restore: file restoration is simple and intuitive. The user can restore logical backup sets (e.g. all photos) or file based (select the folder or file you want restored). Files and folders can be restored with the latest version or earlier version. Rename and overwrite options provide further flexibility.
  • Sync: with Mozy you can sync file across multiple devices including mobile. Access to your corporate files via smart phone is a secure manner is very useful.

  • Backups: Datto does what it's supposed to do, backing up data from servers (and workstations, if need be), and then syncing that data to the cloud.
  • Initial setup: Initial setup is pretty straightforward, in most cases the agent installs remotely from the device.
  • UI: The UI is fairly straightforward and intuitive, at least for IT professionals. It is not difficult to find things or figure out what settings do what.

Cons
  • The eVault process is so thorough, sometimes a simple deployment can take much longer than a customer expects.
  • Their solutions in the past have been targeted to mid-sized to enterprise sized budgets. They now have solutions to fit the small business, but don't market them well.

  • VMware integration for backups is only at the host level, not vCenter, so you can't see all VMs from one place to select them for backup. You've gotta add each host individually and then pick from the list that populates from each individually.
  • The system is appliance-based, so when you run out of local space on the appliance, there's no expansion without buying a larger appliance. You either cut back on your backups to use less space, or you open your wallet.

Carbonite Server Backup does not integrate or support any reporting; it is not good at it. We required monthly and quarterly reports for audit. If we fail in that we get fined or we have to pay a certain amount of money to customer. It does not support cloud instances and we are using N2WS for the cloud instances. This is an additional burden for customers.

Usability
Out of all the vendor we deal with they are one of the best when it comes to customers service. Reliable, you can reach them by telephone easily, Great overall can not say anything to the contrary. Usibility is excellent. I recommend them highly whether you need a simple backup ofr more complex for servers etc.

Usability is great. The web interface is simple and easy to use. While various options are available for client backups, it is very easy to re-use settings of the existing client, so adding new clients is a very fast process. Configuration of the agent on the client-side cannot be easier as well. Datto dashboard provides an overview of the client status, and email notifications can be configured for various events.

Support Rating
I usually find what I need to know by looking in the Carbonite knowledge base online. We haven't had any major problems, usually we just need clarification on a point or more details about a feature so we look it up. We haven't had to call in for help in quite awhile.

My specific example or reason for this rating goes back to a need for support after a client on this platform has a fire. In a nutshell, Datto had no idea how to BMR the image back to the server correctly, and as a result, the RAID on the server was lost, due to the Datto BDR environment not being able to see the RAID card, and the support technician knowing how to inject drivers.

Carbonite Server's direction wasn't really for cloud companies as they are more specialized in robust local backup services. I'm a novice when it comes to server backups and replication, but have learned and picked up a lot from talking to the customer center compared to Veeam where it's mostly just self-learning reading lots of documentation which could be overwhelming at times. We started using Veeam as most of our on-prem servers are ceasing operations as we slowly transition to the cloud. I would still use Carbonite as a fall-back option just in case the cloud fails us. Our company cannot afford to have downtimes as we work closely with a lot of contractors and every minute counts.

Datto is not as feature-rich as Veeam, but it still offers the main features in a great backups solution that will help in a recovery situation. It is mainly meant for smaller businesses, so it's not a Veeam replacement. From that perspective, Datto fills a great void in options for these clients. It doesn't have the features of Unitrends either, but I have not had great experiences with Unitrends, so I would not recommend that option. Veeam is great for larger environments, and Datto is a fantastic option for the next tier down in size.

Return on Investment
  • While EVault can become expensive if you have a lot of data to store, but you have to keep in mind that it does not cost you anything more to restore your data in the event of an emergency. Some systems give you a great upfront cost, until you actually need to retrieve your data.

  • In most cases, Datto will provide the appliance free of charge with a 3-5 year contract which results in a modest monthly fee instead of a large initial outlay and monthly fees.
  • The contract's warranty is top-notch. Failed drives or issues with the appliances are replaced/corrected with free replacements and shipping.
