Cisco UCS Manager

If you have a data center and use the Cisco UCS Blade platform with SAN storage, then UCS manager is the right tool for you. Managing one or a few host servers with UCS manager is pretty easy. You can see pretty quick what is going on with your servers. If you need to configure the fabric interconnects, you pretty much need to use UCS manager to do it. I find that it meets the needs for almost everything we do with the UCS C and B servers. If you have hyper flex servers from Cisco, then you would not want to use UCS manger. If you are not using Cisco servers you may not be able to use UCS manager.

New Relic

For monitoring specific URLs for response time, tracking performance of an application over time, and being able to drill down to the function level where an app component might be experiencing an issue, it seems to be well suited. Also, the overall NR suite seems to experience rapid changes, which could potentially be somewhat unsettling to users who are trying to get familiar with a feature area. I'm unsure also, how consistently these are documented. It seems to have less ability them some other products, to be able to see what low-level procedures on the code or DB side could be bottlenecks.

Pros

Cisco UCS Manager

  • Service Templates: Provision new hardware using templates in the matter of minutes.
  • Firmware updates: Modifying the FW level on a template will kick off an FW upgrade on all attached equipment.
  • Consolidated Views: See all equipment in a single view.

New Relic

  • The New Relic agent does a great job of monitoring and profiling an application.
  • The New Relic alerts make it easy for us to define when individuals should be alerted to an issue.
  • New Relic Synthetics helps us monitor our websites and provide insights into our uptimes.

Cons

Cisco UCS Manager

  • UCSM is known for its bugs, especially during code upgrades.
  • Similar options can be set in a variety of places with varying effects.

New Relic

  • Sometimes we can't drill down deep enough on errors or traces.
  • Inter communication paths are not obvious (stack) though service maps are helpful at times.
  • I often feel like it's not really built for cloud monitoring and microservices.
  • There are additional plugins that our IT dept can't seem to get working with our product, like Kubernetes, PostgreSQL.

I have not yet found any similar product that offers me this range of features to help us keep our online service fast and reliable. Besides this, New Relic is constantly evolving by adding new plugins to emerging technologies and platforms. Server performance measuring features are a key point as our user database grows.

As an engineer, New Relic has been very quick and easy for me to pick up/install/use. It has been less easy for some of the less technical-minded folks in our organization and their UI still is inconsistent multiple years after refactoring their platform to be New Relic One.

Cisco UCSM Support has been very quick to reply and address our concerns, issues, and questions. We have found that Cisco's documentation is clear and concise and fairly easy to find. With Cisco support's help, we are able to quickly and safely meet the demands of our end-users, consistently.

There are times I feel that the initial support is lacking. And in some cases the automated responses of not hearing anything are annoying if the reason why there has been no movement is because we are still waiting to hear back from NR support. So, i think they should loose the automation as it can seem disingenuous

The documentation was clear and concise; the only issue we ran into was custom application naming. Due to HTTPD mod_fcgid and the need for the application name to be set in php.ini (not in .htaccess or the virtual host directive) ... we had issues setting this up.

Alternatives Considered

Cisco UCS Manager

We were a IBM Blade Center shop. IBM was easier to manage. However, it was not as all inclusive. The IBM served us well, but when we started pricing out options Cisco came in a little less expensive on the current promotion they were running. The Cisco UCS has proven to be more stable and reliable, as well.

New Relic has a lot of benefits comparing to other solutions. The main one is usability, compared to other solutions on the market, the interface and usability beats everything else and without good user experience, the user tends to ignore the solution.Great APM integration, easy and simple, which our developing teams love. And Synthetics is way ahead of anything out there, very simple and robust solution that gives us a lot of resources.

Return on Investment

Cisco UCS Manager

  • We were able to achieve a positive ROI on the system within 18 months. This might be unique to our situation. Priced against buying traditional servers and fabrics it would stack up favorably.
  • The ability to easily expand our infrastructure with blades is a strength. The profiles allow us to add a new server which is configured and deployed in a much shorter amount of time than traditional server infrastructure.

New Relic

  • I can't speak to this specifically as I'm just an end user, so I'll speak in terms of the impact on our team. We've used New Relic to monitor a new page we're still in the process of fully rolling out.
  • It allows us to keep an eye on our overall page performance (several different metrics), JavaScript error rate, and other custom logging to make sure the new page is not having any significant downturns in these areas.
  • By comparing these stats to the previous version of the page, we can feel confident in continuing to roll out the new page, and get early warning signs if something goes wrong.
  • Our high priority alerts are tied in to OpsGenie so we get custom notifications off hours.
