For monitoring specific URLs for response time, tracking performance of an application over time, and being able to drill down to the function level where an app component might be experiencing an issue, it seems to be well suited. Also, the overall NR suite seems to experience rapid changes, which could potentially be somewhat unsettling to users who are trying to get familiar with a feature area. I'm unsure also, how consistently these are documented. It seems to have less ability them some other products, to be able to see what low-level procedures on the code or DB side could be bottlenecks.

You can use it while you sleep. My favorite part. If you are not aware of your systems health, don't worry it will tell you. Well first you need other modules from the SolarWinds toolkit. Your other teams will like this because of the flexibility it provides integrating. You now have a centralize system with the ability to give you a good nights rest. If you have silos you will need to review how you can segment your systems, especially security from network.

Pros

New Relic

  • The New Relic agent does a great job of monitoring and profiling an application.
  • The New Relic alerts make it easy for us to define when individuals should be alerted to an issue.
  • New Relic Synthetics helps us monitor our websites and provide insights into our uptimes.

SolarWinds Network Configuration Manager (NCM)

  • Configuration Comparison Tool is great since you can quickly compare configs in a single pane of glass. To make things easier to identify, NCM will highlight the differences.
  • Vulnerability reporting on all current versions of Cisco IOS/NXOS software. NCM will identify the version of firmware you are using and also list the most well known CVE vulnerabilities that are associated with each version.
  • I appreciate NCM is vendor agnostic. It will consume configs from any network device. It can also be customized to look for certain strings that are missing or to look for certain strings that are present. Very flexible and since it isn't vendor specific, I don't feel like I'm being forced to buy a certain manufacturer to obtain all of the 'features' like I do with other products.

Cons

New Relic

  • Sometimes we can't drill down deep enough on errors or traces.
  • Inter communication paths are not obvious (stack) though service maps are helpful at times.
  • I often feel like it's not really built for cloud monitoring and microservices.
  • There are additional plugins that our IT dept can't seem to get working with our product, like Kubernetes, PostgreSQL.

SolarWinds Network Configuration Manager (NCM)

  • The NCM does not work particularly well out of the box on some not so popular network hardware like Ubiquiti, Fluid Mesh and others
  • The auto-select device does not always work and sometimes you have to modify a template to get the full backup to work. SolarWinds tech support can help with this if you are not familiar
  • The email notifications of the backups and the deltas are very simple html. It would be nice to see some improvement on the output there. Looks about 10 years old...

I have not yet found any similar product that offers me this range of features to help us keep our online service fast and reliable. Besides this, New Relic is constantly evolving by adding new plugins to emerging technologies and platforms. Server performance measuring features are a key point as our user database grows.

I simply love this product for what it does. it backups our configs and stores them so i don't have to worry about if we have current configs. It allows me to recover from a cisco failure in a matter of minutes rather than hours. I only have to copy and paste instead of recreate. so the maximum downtime we have is the time it takes to get the physical hardware replaced

As an engineer, New Relic has been very quick and easy for me to pick up/install/use. It has been less easy for some of the less technical-minded folks in our organization and their UI still is inconsistent multiple years after refactoring their platform to be New Relic One.

The user interface is lacking. It is difficult to navigate at times and things can be done multiple ways. Quite often I am confused by how their notification structure works. It is not very intuitive. They do offer a free Academy. They also offer a community of other technical folks. I have enjoyed both.

There are times I feel that the initial support is lacking. And in some cases the automated responses of not hearing anything are annoying if the reason why there has been no movement is because we are still waiting to hear back from NR support. So, i think they should loose the automation as it can seem disingenuous

To be fair, I have not had to involve Support in a number of years, but when I did, I was greeted with enthusiastic engineers who wanted to understand and solve the issue. It was a fairly complex scenario and I have discovered in my most recent implementation that engineering included that option as a standard now.

The documentation was clear and concise; the only issue we ran into was custom application naming. Due to HTTPD mod_fcgid and the need for the application name to be set in php.ini (not in .htaccess or the virtual host directive) ... we had issues setting this up.

Alternatives Considered

New Relic

New Relic has a lot of benefits comparing to other solutions. The main one is usability, compared to other solutions on the market, the interface and usability beats everything else and without good user experience, the user tends to ignore the solution.Great APM integration, easy and simple, which our developing teams love. And Synthetics is way ahead of anything out there, very simple and robust solution that gives us a lot of resources.

SolarWinds Network Configuration Manager (NCM)

We have a very diverse IT environment (Cisco/Palo Alto, VMWare, Cisco UC, SD-WAN, Windows Servers) and we wanted to have one suite of software that we could manage as many of our different areas in one single pane of glass. SolarWinds allows the network team, VOIP team, Storage and Systems teams to all use the same platform to get their monitoring, alerting and reporting.

Return on Investment

New Relic

  • I can't speak to this specifically as I'm just an end user, so I'll speak in terms of the impact on our team. We've used New Relic to monitor a new page we're still in the process of fully rolling out.
  • It allows us to keep an eye on our overall page performance (several different metrics), JavaScript error rate, and other custom logging to make sure the new page is not having any significant downturns in these areas.
  • By comparing these stats to the previous version of the page, we can feel confident in continuing to roll out the new page, and get early warning signs if something goes wrong.
  • Our high priority alerts are tied in to OpsGenie so we get custom notifications off hours.

SolarWinds Network Configuration Manager (NCM)

  • Prior to breaking the baseline function, NCM was considered our most valuable network tool. Without adding any additional FTEs, we could ensure we maintained current backups, ensured consistent application of security settings and can monitor for unauthorized changes.
  • For a very little additional cost, we vastly improved our network security and availability.
