Nutanix

VDI deployment used to be the best business case but today, there are no limits anymore, Nutanix is well suited in any situation, any workload and now, the x86 barrier fell down with the support of IBM Power architecture.

Scale Computing HC3

I think in a smaller environment, Scale provides a great way to get into a virtualized environment. The setup is very simple and it doesn't require significant knowledge of IT infrastructure in order to get up and running. Scale doesn't offer the advanced insight into storage and application resource groups as their competitors do, however it is not designed for advanced users. It is more of a closed box and support handles most requests or issues quickly, but there is not a way for administrators to easily see advanced details of the cluster.

Pros

Nutanix

  • Simplifies the data center. One click upgrades have made updating storage a breeze.
  • Easily expand your cluster. Add another node and instantly have access to more storage and processing power.
  • Simple setup, we set up 2 clusters of 4 nodes each in an afternoon, try that with traditional 3 tier!

Scale Computing HC3

  • Simplicity - Scale HC3 takes the guesswork and time investment out of managing a virtualized server environment and you don't need to go to expensive classes to become an expert.
  • Performance has been stellar and reliability is unmatched. Our Scale nodes have been up and online since installation three years ago.
  • The support staff is there to help if you ever need it and they'll look into your system at any time to make sure everything is running as designed.
  • The virtualized environment is robust and scale-able and there's no need to do a server refresh ever again. If a node fails, the VMs migrate over to another node and no one except the IT staff knows about it. You can keep your old nodes in place until the disks fall out of them and you'll be covered.

Cons

Nutanix

  • Would like file services besides Acropolis
  • DR replication to cloud

Scale Computing HC3

  • I would like to have some access to the host system itself but I can see why it is locked away from the user. One of the main selling points of the system is it's hands free reliability. End users mucking things up would work against that.
  • I would like to see a bit more robust back up system to have a truly 100% self sustained VM environment. The system allows you to create snapshots very easily, both manual and scheduled. But it would be nice to be able to set up a backup/restore with deduplication to external locations.

Never had an outage or an error. Once a hard drive failed, but Scale kept on working flawlessly without interruption.

Customer support at Scale is outstanding overall. My only complaint would be there are several alerts and notices with ambiguous terminology that have a tendency to generate panic. To further the problem, the guides available through the customer portal do not do a good job of explaining what is going on exactly and often have statements saying you can ignore the problem. If I can ignore the problem, then why am I getting alerts about it?

Purchasing the migration service or tool if one has older systems, a large number of servers, or coming from another VM solution would be a great advantage.

Alternatives Considered

Nutanix

I personally prefer the Nutanix approach based on their hardware, software, and firmware integration. The technical options and features make it a great product to be working with.

We've used VMWare and Citrix in the past. We recently attended a GMIS conference in South Carolina and enjoyed the overall simplicity of the product. Performance is up by about 30% over Citrix Xen-Server and the cost of the products is significantly less. We had purchased 5 Dell R610's and a 3 Dell NAS for around $140,000. taking up 18U. We purchased 3 SCALE Servers for less than half of that and have been very pleased with the results.

HC3 is one of the best products I have purchased for our district. It is unbelievably reliable to the point that they shoot themselves in the foot on support contracts.

Return on Investment

Nutanix

  • Eliminated Service Desk calls by end-users which were related to hardware underperforming or contention issues.
  • Introduced flash based hardware storage for our virtualization workloads.

Scale Computing HC3
