Users have successfully utilized the service to minimize data leakage and maintain uninterrupted work environments. The ease of implementation has made it a popular choice, as it eliminates the need for manual maintenance of web filtering lists.

The service's versatility is evident in its application across different settings. We used FortiGuard Web Filtering Service as part of our Fortinet gateway to manage all our network connections between the world and our office. FortiGuard Web Filtering Service in particular helped us filter our harmful and damaging websites, as well as minimise data leakage, while still allowing people to perform their jobs without being impeded.
  • Rule-based web filtering
  • Categorised web filtering
  • Web sites are often miscategorised. I was regularly having to submit websites to the Fortinet review service to have them re-categorised correctly. So, users would report websites were blocked when they should not be. It happened a lot.
FortiGuard Web Filtering Service is well-suited for an organisation that is able to funnel all its Internet connectivity through one device, i.e., the office environment - or perhaps where WFH workers are using a remote desktop or VPN.

It allows management/IT to minimise risk by blocking websites that may be harmful, as well as websites that may enable data leakage, or even are websites that people ought not to be visiting in the workplace.

We need an easy way to filter malicious and unwanted websites from our corporate network. Manually maintaining a web filtering list would be too cumbersome to handle, so we subscribed to FortiGuard Web Filtering Service web filtering service.
  • Quick turnaround for reclassifying websites
  • Effective web filtering
  • Easy to implement with a GUI
  • Some websites are classified as Meaningless content, especially links used in emails to unsubscribe from lists. Luckily FortiGuard Web Filtering Service is responsive about reclassifying those quickly.
Corporate or educational environments would benefit from this service. Blocking access to social media, malicious and adult websites is very simple to implement on modern FortiGuard Web Filtering Service firewalls. FortiGuard Web Filtering Service being a business product doesn't fit well in the home due to it's higher level of networking required to set up. However, I wouldn't want FortiGuard Web Filtering Service to dilute their brand by offering home products like Cisco does.

We have used FortiGuard Web Filtering Service for around 4 years. We previously tried other software such as Squid Proxy, but it was not effective. Our problem was not solved until we tried using the FortiGate Next-Generation Firewall. There was no need to install a root certificate on the PCs, plus the category of website and antivirus protection was inside already. Previously when using Squid Proxy, we had to add the website names and compile them, which wasted a lot of time.
  • FortiGuard Web Filtering Service effectively protects websites. There is no need to install the root certificate on all PCs inside the network.
  • The database signature updates every hour, so we don't need to spend time updating the website to blacklist or whitelist.
  • It can protect very well. Whereas, some traditional proxies can not do that. For example, others can not block Youtube or Facebook.
  • It can also protect the search keyword, like in Youtube or other social media, Google, etc.
  • The functionality of FortiGuard is simple and easy to use but not advance.
  • The command line is difficult to use and understand.
I recommend FortiGuard [Web Filtering Service] for small and medium businesses. It is well suited if you need to block bad websites like pornography, so I especially recommend using it for schools. For example, you can implement a firewall between the public internet and your local network of computer labs, students, and staff.

Right now, we have FortiGuard Web Filtering Sevice as a proof of concept project within our department. We're also using 1 test high school, 1 test middle school, and 1 elementary school included in the pilot.
  • Easy Implementation.
  • Worked well with most of the apps we use.
  • GUI was easy to use.
  • Interface was not easy for some other users, but after they got it down, it worked well.
  • Took a little while to get help from support. Had to call the project manager to get help. But they took care of the issue after the fact.
I think for an enterprise company FortiGuard Web Filtering Service is an ideal solution. For a school district, maybe not so much. That's only because we have a wide arrange of apps we want to be filtered.

We use the FortiGuard Web Filtering Service on our Firewalls at all locations, branches, and enterprises. We are using multiple different configurations of the service to maintain separate rule sets for our different types of networks and users. The integration with our firewalls and FortiManager allow a seamless experience for the user across all of our sites.

Business Problems it Addresses
  • Phishing -- protects our users from inadvertent compromise, as it typically is the mechanism that catches phishing attempts.
  • Prevents damaging types of non-work related browsing.
  • Secures our guest wireless, preventing illegal activity.
  • Allows for logging of user activity if needed.
  • The logging provided in FortiGuard Web Filtering Services is fantastic. It allows you to capture all requisite information. I personally have my log view set to show address accessed, time browsed, user, machine, all IP addresses involved, computer name, site Category, and the action taken.
  • In 4 years I have had to report 6 incorrect website ratings. Every time I've reported an issue, there has been an update to the site listing by the next morning.
  • Creating separate rule sets is simple, allowing for easy management of different groups of users.
  • The method for allowing individual overrides is clunky, but it functions. A clean way to allow individual overrides (with the ability to set a timer) would be fantastic.
FortiGuard Web Filtering Service has served us well for protecting both business and guest networks. We currently have multiple tiers on the business side running different rule sets, and some shared custom groups allowing us to manage access with as much granularity as we desire.
