NetBackup is used to perform automated file level and disk level backups of all Enterprise servers. It is primarily used by the IT department but is also available to other departments as a service. The Enterprise Storage team provides this service to allow for the restoration of servers in the event of data loss or corruption. This is an invaluable tool for both business continuity and disaster recovery.
  • Full Backup
  • Incremental Backup
  • File Level Restore
  • OS level restore for VMware
Cons
  • When an error in the backup process occurs, manual intervention is usually necessary by the Server Administrator.
  • Some Virtual Machine servers cannot be backed up while online.
  • User client is a little clumsy while attempting to access files for restore.
NetBackup is a great product for Enterprise Servers managed by a large IT department. It is not the best solution for individual users as it doesn't do the file syncs similar to Microsoft OneDrive. It does a great job of allowing the end user to manage his/her own file restores without having to wait for the Backup Administrator to be involved. However, full OS restores to a separate location are slightly more complex.

Veritas Netbackup, it works.

It is being used as the enterprise backup solution for all of our backup needs, currently we are using this to backup file shares for the NAS, our Vmware Environment, our physical server environment and our database server environment. We also use it to manage our tape library and our tape environment for all daily and monthly backups.
  • Upgrades are typically easy and normally have either no issues or very few that are easily resolved (wait a month or 2 before upgrading)
  • Using accelerator for the vm environment works well, and file level restores have been successful
  • Full vm recovery has worked every time
  • Backing up a physical server and restoring to a vm works as described
  • GRT Exchange backups are pretty easy, to setup
  • File level restores are simple
Cons
  • GRT Exchange restores using the ip less dag take a long time to browse for files to restore
  • VM file level restores dont work without a client installed, but the client is not needed for the backup
  • GRT backups can eat up a lot of time for the restore
  • Full VM recovery works but typically you have to remove the nic, and play around with other settings for it to work
Veritas Netbackup does work as it is described but sometimes there is some setup information that is not necessarily published or is hard to locate for proper setup. Support is mixed between America and outsourced locations. It is well suited for vm backups using accelerator which speeds up all the vm backups by not sending duplicate data to the storage location.

We're using Symantec NetBackup across our agency to backup physical servers, virtual severs, NetApp filers, and some desktops. It allows us to manage all of our backups and reporting from a single application. Symantec NetBackup is very flexible and it has a ton of options which can accommodate businesses of every size.
  • VMware backups are very fast and easy to manage. Huge improvement over VCB.
  • Full control of every aspect of the STUs, lifecycle policies, policies, schedules, policy types, exclusions, and etc.
  • Great support, constant improvements, scalability, flexibility.
Cons
  • Activity monitor needs to improve transparency by keeping ALL backup jobs (including SLP duplications, child jobs and parent jobs) within a group in the hierarchical view. In the current setup we cannot tell if an SLP duplication job finished for any specific parent job. This is scary!
  • NetBackup needs to have a better way to export views under Activity Monitor, NetBackup Management, Media & Management, Devices, and Credentials into TXT, CSV, XLS, and PDF.
  • Implement Trash Bin for certain objects like policies which will allow you to restore an accidentally deleted policy. This will eliminate having to perform a catalog restore for (1) lost backup policy.
  • Implement Categories for Active, Disabled, Temporary, and Manual backup policies. This will allow users to manage which policies they want to view. However, you should also keep an option for the classic all-in-one style view.

NBU--Very good choice if you have a wide variety of data types and requirements.

Netbackup (NBU) was used to backup all systems at one point, but cost drove us to use another solution. NBU currently is being used to backup SQL application level data. At the time of the switch, NBU wasn't able to backup Hyper-V, which also influenced our decision to switch.
  • It is a major player in the backup space, and has an answer for most every data protection problem.
  • Support is pretty good by IT standards. They were always able to quickly isolate a problem and offer a solution.
  • They have appliance-based solutions which help with building out a topology.
Cons
  • They should be on top of developments so that they can release compatible updates. They lost our business in part because they were slow to react to Hyper-V 2012 R2.
  • Cost is prohibitive for many IT shops, large or small.
Well suited where you have different data types that need to be protected, including virtual, nas (NDMP), database, etc. They have most everything covered under one umbrella.

The organizational use of Symantec NetBackup includes installing, configuring and administration at enterprise level client sites. Symantec NetBackup is deployed in the lab here and is used to emulate problems customers have in their environment and provide solutions. With the advent use of PBBA's the 5230 and 5330 to protect and manage data Veritas has brought technology which is user friendly and easy to set up.
  • De-duplication is 45x better than the leading disk basked storage.
  • NDMP accelerator support
  • Intelligent VMware protection using V-Ray technology.
