(1-17 of 17)Reliable backup solution
- Centralised Backup Solution
- Easy to use for administrator
- Expendable in case of storages
- Hardware Independent
- Flexible Licenses
- Reliable Infrastructure
- Independent storage solution
- Integration with almost every Database
- Integration with Virtual Environment
- Graphical representation of Storage
- OPS CENTER provide detailed reporting
- Admin console
- SAP HANA application Templates should also be introduced instead of scripting
- SAP MAXDB application template should also be introduced
- Tape Management need improvement
- MOBILE connectivity is missing
- Admin console is so simple it should be more funcky or stylish
- Small database should also be considered for backup
For SMEs veritas would be an expensive solution because its an enterprise level solution may not be recommended for smaller organization. Backup administrator with high skill may requied for such solution which is also not affordable by them.
Best product for medium size company
- Easy to use
- Data accuracy
- Files recovery
- Admin Console
A Stable product with years of experience in the field
The overall capacity of front end data is close to 1.3 Petabytes scaling across 2 data centers in 2 different regions. They act as a primary and secondary to each other.
We mainly looked at a trusted long timer in the market to be able to invest to ensure the solution is proven to be trusted.
- The stablity
- Overall SImplicity in operations
- scalablity
- support for multiple platforms
- Maintenance of multiple servers can be a bit of a chore
- A centeralized operation center with better repoting capablities would have been good
Veritas Netbackup: ultimate king of backup empire
- SAN data transfer and LAN control transfer for doing VMware backups.
- Ability to perform restore through both LAN and SAN.
- Ability to handle DFSR backups , VSS sometimes does not work .
- Logs complexity and troubleshooting
It is less suited for DFSR backups, less suited for large changes of daily data, dedupe is not integrated, rather depends upon additional license like MSDP and specific hardware, configuring AIR replication is also very complex.
Veritas NetBackup Review
- It is an enterprise solution for backups and restores.
- Backs up and restores data within RTP/RPO, given a stable infrastructure.
- Cloud backups are fantastic; they have very user-friendly GUI to configure them.
- Cloud duplication - It should duplicate data from standard to Glacier without extra read and write.
Veritas Netbackup, it works.
- Upgrades are typically easy and normally have either no issues or very few that are easily resolved (wait a month or 2 before upgrading)
- Using accelerator for the vm environment works well, and file level restores have been successful
- Full vm recovery has worked every time
- Backing up a physical server and restoring to a vm works as described
- GRT Exchange backups are pretty easy, to setup
- File level restores are simple
- GRT Exchange restores using the ip less dag take a long time to browse for files to restore
- VM file level restores dont work without a client installed, but the client is not needed for the backup
- GRT backups can eat up a lot of time for the restore
- Full VM recovery works but typically you have to remove the nic, and play around with other settings for it to work
- It is a major player in the backup space, and has an answer for most every data protection problem.
- Support is pretty good by IT standards. They were always able to quickly isolate a problem and offer a solution.
- They have appliance-based solutions which help with building out a topology.
- They should be on top of developments so that they can release compatible updates. They lost our business in part because they were slow to react to Hyper-V 2012 R2.
- Cost is prohibitive for many IT shops, large or small.
- Full Backup
- Incremental Backup
- File Level Restore
- OS level restore for VMware
- When an error in the backup process occurs, manual intervention is usually necessary by the Server Administrator.
- Some Virtual Machine servers cannot be backed up while online.
- User client is a little clumsy while attempting to access files for restore.
Safe & Secure Netbackup
- Fast and reliable
- Ease of use
- Secure backups
- I really can't say. It works fine for us as is.
- Data protection for cloud-based services.
- Excellent interaction with VM and other virtual environments.
Not a new kid on the block!
- uses in-house catalog vs database products
- Netbackup -- Biomni provides self-service backup subscription with a simple to use user interface
- Agentless backup for virtual servers
- Connectivity to major cloud service providers.
- The client can perform self restore from the server
- Their user interface could be updated as the user interface has been around for a long time.
- Advance features are a challenge to configure
- Media Server MDSP limitation may require proper planning
For a new backup administrator, it may pose a challenge to configure advanced features, as to enable the features it requires to go in-depth into settings which are not easy to locate.
Backing up data for the future
- Veritas has a great GUI, the look is a little dated, but it is very functional.
- The media organization is simple and easy to maintain. I have several retention times: 2 weeks, 6 weeks, 6 months, 7 years, and indefinite. I can quickly view and manage all my retention policies quickly.
- Updates are easy and support is very helpful. This makes the transition quick and painless.
- The GUI is very old looking. This does not kill the performance, it just looks to be 10 years old.
- Some things need to be done from the CLI(command line interface). if you have not used this before it will take some learning and a good understanding of Linux.
NetBackup is reliable but can get expensive to maintain
- NetBackup integrates well with Windows servers. The client is reliable.
- NetBackup does a good job of tracking tapes in the catalog, whether the tapes are still on-site in the robot or off-site at a storage facility.
- We saw a significant reduction (between 20% and sometimes as much as 80%) on backup sizes with deduplication. This was more so with things like Exchange and SharePoint, less so with images and video files.
- The upgrade process with NetBackup is very challenging, at least in our implementation. Each upgrade required a significant amount of troubleshooting, and then we would have to fix integrations with other Veritas and Microsoft products that were no longer compatible with the minor release update of NetBackup.
- NetBackup doesn't always provide, at least in our environment, the best status reports on what is working and what is not. If something didn't go right with a backup, we didn't always see it right away.
- The cost of NetBackup was increasing. We were not licensed for their multi-data center replication and high availability components, so we made the decision to move off NetBackup rather than accept a significant price jump.
NetBackup Review
- Backup to Disk
- Physical to Virtual Conversion
- Remote agent support
- Functionality of importing jobs does not work 100% of the time
- When attempting a restore from tape the system does not tell you what tapes are needed until the job is already started
- Instant Discovery and add of agents
NetBackup for SharePoint
- It has a flexible schedule that can be set to perform the required back ups.
- It has add-on for other applications such as Microsoft SharePoint.
- NetBackup lets you restore individual items or site collections from SharePoint.
- I dislike the fact that every server needs a license in a SharePoint Farm; servers such as the indexing server shouldn't need a license if NetBackup will not be used for it.
Simple review from a simple storage admin...
- The activity monitor allows me to easily see if there are issues with backup jobs or the environment.
- Community support for NBU is very good. I've been able to research issues with ease and find other users that have been in similar situations.
- Policy management for backups is very easy and there are lots of options.
- Limited 60tb MSDP per media server is a frustrating limitation. I have an 86tb san that I cannot leverage all the space on.
- A refresh of the GUI is needed. There are menus within menus and it is sometimes difficult to find what you are looking for.
- Creating someone type of FAQ for newer administrators would be useful. I'm sure I have run across a bunch of questions that have been asked 50 times before.
Intelligent Data Protection
- De-duplication is 45x better than the leading disk basked storage.
- NDMP accelerator support
- Intelligent VMware protection using V-Ray technology.
Network Administrator
- VMware backups are very fast and easy to manage. Huge improvement over VCB.
- Full control of every aspect of the STUs, lifecycle policies, policies, schedules, policy types, exclusions, and etc.
- Great support, constant improvements, scalability, flexibility.
- Activity monitor needs to improve transparency by keeping ALL backup jobs (including SLP duplications, child jobs and parent jobs) within a group in the hierarchical view. In the current setup we cannot tell if an SLP duplication job finished for any specific parent job. This is scary!
- NetBackup needs to have a better way to export views under Activity Monitor, NetBackup Management, Media & Management, Devices, and Credentials into TXT, CSV, XLS, and PDF.
- Implement Trash Bin for certain objects like policies which will allow you to restore an accidentally deleted policy. This will eliminate having to perform a catalog restore for (1) lost backup policy.
- Implement Categories for Active, Disabled, Temporary, and Manual backup policies. This will allow users to manage which policies they want to view. However, you should also keep an option for the classic all-in-one style view.
