Veritas NetBackup is implemented as a primary tool in the organization for backuping a huge landscape of Aix , Unix and Windows machines. This includes Oracle , DB2 and SQL Databases.
The overall capacity of front end data is close to 1.3 Petabytes scaling across 2 data centers in 2 different regions. They act as a primary and secondary to each other.
We mainly looked at a trusted long timer in the market to be able to invest to ensure the solution is proven to be trusted.
  • The stablity
  • Overall SImplicity in operations
  • scalablity
  • support for multiple platforms
Cons
  • Maintenance of multiple servers can be a bit of a chore
  • A centeralized operation center with better repoting capablities would have been good
The product is very stable and proven in the enterprise environments. We have deployed the solution in multiple customers and have not had negative feedback. The vendor support is top class and very professional. The solution overall has options to be deployed in multiple flavors which allows the easy option in terms of planning the capacity or even Infra scaling.

We use NetBackup for our SharePoint Farm. We like that NetBackup has an add-in for SharePoint so in case there's a need to restore a single item from a list or document library it can be done easily. We resolved our problem with not being able to restore a single item or a SharePoint site collection which is beneficial since now we are able to restore items without the need of restoring a whole DB. We use NetBackup across our Americas division.
  • It has a flexible schedule that can be set to perform the required back ups.
  • It has add-on for other applications such as Microsoft SharePoint.
  • NetBackup lets you restore individual items or site collections from SharePoint.
Cons
  • I dislike the fact that every server needs a license in a SharePoint Farm; servers such as the indexing server shouldn't need a license if NetBackup will not be used for it.
As mentioned before NetBakcup is perfect for restoring a single item instead of being forced to restore a whole DB which in many scenarios is not ideal for the business. That way the business doesn't have to waist time with restoring a whole DB while it only needs access to 1 or two corrupted files.

NetBackup has been our primary backup solution for all of our organization data and servers. NetBackup backed up all of our virtual and physical servers, as well as our SANs across two different data center environments. We also use NetBackup to write our off-site backups to tape. In late 2016, we implemented deduplication with NetBackup to reduce the size of our backups since we were pulling more of them from remote data centers to our home office where the backups were administered and written to tape.
  • NetBackup integrates well with Windows servers. The client is reliable.
  • NetBackup does a good job of tracking tapes in the catalog, whether the tapes are still on-site in the robot or off-site at a storage facility.
  • We saw a significant reduction (between 20% and sometimes as much as 80%) on backup sizes with deduplication. This was more so with things like Exchange and SharePoint, less so with images and video files.
Cons
  • The upgrade process with NetBackup is very challenging, at least in our implementation. Each upgrade required a significant amount of troubleshooting, and then we would have to fix integrations with other Veritas and Microsoft products that were no longer compatible with the minor release update of NetBackup.
  • NetBackup doesn't always provide, at least in our environment, the best status reports on what is working and what is not. If something didn't go right with a backup, we didn't always see it right away.
  • The cost of NetBackup was increasing. We were not licensed for their multi-data center replication and high availability components, so we made the decision to move off NetBackup rather than accept a significant price jump.
NetBackup is a good product. It is reliable. As our complexity grew with multiple hypervisors, multiple production data centers and needs around fail-over and high availability, the cost was increasing and we had to make a decision to change solutions. NetBackup, at least in our case, does not seem to compress its data streams very well and our backup cycles were growing to the point where one day might not always finish before the next day's jobs were scheduled to begin.

Good choice for company backups.

Data backup for both infrastructure (NAS, SAN, VM, ...) and files with host agent installed. We need complete backup software to ensure our company meets legal and internal requirements for backups and archiving.
  • Backup vmWare infrastructure.
  • Integration with storage systems (Netapp).
  • Fast operations (backup and restore).
  • Data security with encryption.
  • Support of multiple backup hardware.
Cons
  • Integration with third-party disk storage.
  • Old user interface.
  • Adding new features (integration with MS Azure, ...)
Backuping complex infrastructures (VMware ESXi, Microsoft Hyper-V, Oracle, and MSSQL databases, etc.). Regarding product price, it's not the most affordable for small businesses, but it can handle nearly all infrastructures and systems. With good training people, it's a Swiss knife of company data backup, no stress about keeping backups in a safe place!

We are using Veritas NetBackup to manage our backups and offsite data information. I am able to assign specific tapes to a storage unit, track offsite retention, and keep all my backups organized. Since we have all the policies and protection jobs configured, all I need to do is prep the tapes that NetBackup kicks out and send them off-site. Very infrequently do we ave problems or issues. With a basic understanding of backups and some training NetBackup can be configured to meet any company's needs.
  • Veritas has a great GUI, the look is a little dated, but it is very functional.
  • The media organization is simple and easy to maintain. I have several retention times: 2 weeks, 6 weeks, 6 months, 7 years, and indefinite. I can quickly view and manage all my retention policies quickly.
  • Updates are easy and support is very helpful. This makes the transition quick and painless.
Cons
  • The GUI is very old looking. This does not kill the performance, it just looks to be 10 years old.
  • Some things need to be done from the CLI(command line interface). if you have not used this before it will take some learning and a good understanding of Linux.
For any medium to large company that needs to send Tb of data off site, NetBackup would be a great solution. However, in addition to the software you will need the tapes, drives and all other media related hardware.
