Overall Satisfaction with ADP Workforce Now

We use ADP Workforce Now (WFN) as our Payroll and Benefits Self Service portal. It processes all our time off requests, as well as our benefit elections, sending feeds to our carriers on a weekly basis, as well as processing our payroll, which we have set up with Job Cost and Labor Distribution.
  • ADP Reporting is awesome. Having the ability to create custom reports on the fly using almost any field in ADP cannot be overestimated.
  • Learn@ADP is a great feature as well. Networking with other payroll professionals who use other products, I am constantly struck by how little training other providers offer for their services compared to ADP.
  • Labor Distribution has a tendency to mess up special calculations (like 401(k) ER Match) because it recalcs all taxes for the labor distribution report as opposed to just the payroll register, causing unnecessary crossfooting errors which hold up and crash the entire payroll process on occasion. Even when it doesn't crash the payroll, it still causes some special calculations to not work correctly under specific circumstances. I have to keep a list of those circumstances and manually recalculate my special calcs on those occasions, and every now and then I come across a new circumstance to add to my list.
  • They took out the subtotal of hours by type to be paid per person feature (the F10 function from PCPW) in the paydata grid entry screen. This was a huge mistake on the part of the developers of WFN. They need to bring it back. It is essential when having to manually make changes in labor distribution in the paydata batches, so you don't have to manually recheck everyone in the batch if you get to the end and find your batch has gone out of balance, expecially if it's by .01 of an hour.
  • Change how mulitple distributions are shown on manual checks. Having it print as one check, but show up on all the registers as multiple checks is really confusing. Why can't it look like it does for regularly processed paychecks?
  • There needs to be better access to archives of terminated employee data. The data is purged from easy access once W-2's are generated, although most information can still be retrieved through the creation of custom reports. I miss the PCPW feature of being able to make an HR company to keep your old employee information in an easily accessible format when the payroll system purges every year.
  • WFN is versatile, upgradable, and can meet our changing needs. We have added several modules to the basic payroll module over the years, which has improved our ability to provide faster and more accurate reporting.
WFN saves time by making it easy to create custom reports that can be run and modified quite easily. It also provides a one-stop shop for employees, who can view their paychecks, check their benefits, and make changes to their information, such as address changes, federal tax withholdings, direct deposit, etc. They can even make time off requests electronically, even through the mobile app. By having this self service feature available to the employees, it frees up a lot of time I used to spend doing data entry.
I have used Paycom in other facets of my job, and there is no comparison. Paycom has similar features, but they do not have as intuitive of a user interface, either for the employees or the administrators. And their reporting features do not even come close to providing the ease of use and adaptability of ADP Workforce Now. It doesn't appear that Paycom's reporting feature even allows you to create a calculating field, meaning all I have been able to do is export raw data to Excel, which I then have to manually create the calculations to get the same data I can create once in a Workforce Now custom report and run over and over again in any format I desire, PDF, Excel, HTML, etc.
I think WFN would be a case of overkill for very small companies with geographically close employees. However, for larger (over 50 employees) companies and for companies with geographically diverse work locations, WFN has a lot to offer in the way of time and attendance options, mobile options, portal/intranet options, and benefits, making a convenient "one-stop shop". However, it does take some time for the administrator to acquaint themselves with the scope of setting up and maintaining all these features, so be aware that you will need to make a substantial time investment to get the most out of the features.
