Overall Satisfaction with Apple iCloud

I use Apple iCloud to share notes, files and also move files from device to device. Of course we also backup our iPhones to the iCloud server, in case a device becomes lost, damaged or nonfunctional. iCloud allows multiple people to edit files simultaneously and gives me good visibility to note changes.

In another role, I use iCloud to SYNC song transition settings through a mobile DJ app known as OffTrack. OffTrack stores my song transitions in the iCloud, allowing me to make modifications from any device.

Overall, iCloud is good but limited. Other third-party items, such as those run by Microsoft or Google, do not SYNC well with iCloud.

Pros

  • Syncing changes I make within an app, note or file across all devices instantly.
  • Transfers files quickly to iCloud drive
  • Makes editing shared notes or photos simple and seamless

Cons

  • Search indexing for files is slow and often inaccurate
  • Mail syncing for files and non-flagged messages is slow and often inaccurate
  • General lack of seamless integration with apps made by Google or Microsoft
  • Massively saves us time managing Active Directory accounts from device to device
  • Difficult to integrate with Microsoft logins and security chains — time is lost especially during password or permissions changes
  • Average when it comes to corporate VPN integration. Neither a gain nor a loss.
For all of the reasons previously stated. Apple starts with a high bar — but still has room to grow. They have a superior performance, system and user experience when directly compared to their competition — yet they do not play well with their competitors products, which are also needed in a modern workplace.
The biggest thing is Apple doesn't lose versions and changes. With Office 365 and various Google corporate programs, they would track versions — but not well. If someone sat with a file open and later closed it after a colleague had made changes, some of those changes would get lost. This doesn't happen with Apple file sharing. But Apple is harder to set permissions across files and workgroups than its competitors.

Yes

Apple's quick, seamless SYNC to the cloud across multiple devices -- such as iPad, MacBook Pro and iPhone -- is invaluable to my work. I can start a project in one place, pick it up in another and submit it in another. Colleagues can do the same. We rarely to never worry about information going missing — which is something we have experienced with both Microsoft Office 365 and Google Office. Of course, should an Apple device become damaged or inoperable, it is easy to restore a new device from the cloud. And locking down a stolen device is quick. What Apple could do better is allow more third-party apps to take advantage of iCloud syncing. Be it with settings, files, lists or songs -- using the seamless SYNC of iCloud would be beneficial to so many of Apple's third-party partners.
