Overall Satisfaction with Avalara

We use Avalara AvaTax for sales tax filing and compliance. We use the exemption certificate management. We also used Avalara track1099 for filing and mailing. The product helps us maintain compliance and educates us on nexus as well as helps keep historical data of our sales per state. The exemption certificate management helps us validate certificates and keeps track of expirations.

Pros

  • I wanted to share how much I appreciate using Avalara AvaTax. It provides great peace of mind knowing that our tax returns are consistently filed on time without any issues.

Cons

  • We had a problem after the Shopify for Avalara app updated in January. During our integration meetings, we were not told about any configuration changes that would impact the tax calculation logic for these orders.
  • This caused major tax calculation errors on orders from exempt customers, negatively affecting our customers experience and requiring our team to correct them immediately.
  • We believe that better preparation and more proactive communication from Avalara regarding necessary updates and their potential impact on configuration settings would have ensured a smoother transition.
  • It's sometimes challenging when I receive responses outside of normal business hours, as it can delay issue resolution.
  • We have found that Avalara is an essential partner in helping our company maintain compliance standards every day.

I would day medium-high as we ran into issues with the transactions for both integrations that we needed to clean up.
Overall, the platform has been operating effectively and efficiently, and we are pleased with its performance. While we recognize that there is a learning curve associated with mastering the platform and its processes, we find Avalara to be a reliable and valuable tool that our company is very happy with.
We are currently using managed returns filing, exemption certificate management, professional services (VDA), and track1099.

We have seen tremendous benefits from using Avalara AvaTax, especially in managing our returns. I particularly appreciate the nexus map feature, which is very helpful for tracking our obligations across different states. Overall, Avalara has provided excellent support in maintaining tax compliance. We have also utilized the VDA (Voluntary Disclosure Agreement) program for states where we previously were not aware of our filing requirements, which has been extremely valuable.
