Use Cases and Deployment Scope

BambooHR is used as our core HRIS in tracking job information and for time off requests. It's a great tool for small organizations.

Pros and Cons

Pros

Fast customer service response for Tier 0 questions
Highly customizable access levels on a per field basis
Several integrations in their marketplace

Cons

More robust reporting. Customers are limited to a few standard reports that are uneditable. Custom reports are a step in the right direction but still severely lag in functionality.
Custom/Smart calc fields - BambooHR only has 1-2 fields that can be smart calc based on other fields. We have several use cases for other smart calc fields but BambooHR doesn't offer these.
Limited customization - BambooHR comes with some default tables but they cannot be customized to meet your org's needs. Instead, you're left creating several other custom fields that are excluded from native integrations. There are also several limitations in customizing approval flows. I think it's incredibly limiting for organizations with more mature, advanced workflows or reporting needs.

Affordable HRIS - BambooHR has competitive pricing and offers pre-payment discounts allowing us to save on systems budgeting.

Usability

BambooHR is very easy to use. While it lags in functionality, it is very quick to learn the product as an admin. They provide several, helpful knowledge articles for admins to self-serve.

BambooHR has an incredibly quick reponse rate and resolution for Tier 0 questions (usually within 1 business day). The downside is that more technical questions or issues (such as API issues) can take several weeks.

BambooHR Reporting

BambooHR does allow you to create reports and pull in any field from the system, but it lags in easily filtering or drilling down on custom reports. If you want more granular turnover data, internal mobility data, etc. you are left with exporting reports and running calculations in Excel.

Bamboo is great for small organizations (<~200). As your organization scales, Bamboo is quickly outgrown. It's purposely simplistic for small companies with few HR team members. Unfortunately, this is their targeted market and they only push product updates for that market and miss the mark for current customers trying to stay with Bamboo as they grow. If you're a company that is forecasting headcount growth, Bamboo is not for you, however, if you are a small employer and plan to stay small, then Bamboo is a great fit and can likely meet most of your needs across all modules.
