Overall Satisfaction with Citrix ShareFile

We use Citrix ShareFile internally as our main data repository. All company-related documents are stored in a strict file and folder convention with strict policies and controls around access, control, and editing rights. We use both a local storage zone and a Citrix Cloud hosted zone as our primary platform is running off Citrix. The Cloud hosted element is utilized to take advantage of features such as cloud-based document viewing and editing. Also, we use rightsignature as our electronic signature platform which is tightly integrated with ShareFile. We enjoy the enterprise level features available to administrators and the audit reports. The Citrix Files app is generally used and for some customers we utilise the Sync app on a local file server, map the drive to power users. We find that copying large numbers of files is quite slow. We have also found that deep and complicated folder structures and long filenames greatly affects the performance negatively.
  • Ease of sharing files using links and setting access controls for these links
  • Enterprise-level controls for an administrator via policies
  • Enterprise-level of reporting and audit trails
  • Complex and deep folder structures negatively affect performance.
  • Certain file types do not function properly such as CAD files.
  • Performance can be slow.
  • Difficult to see folder permissions and who can access, view, & edit.
  • Hard to justify the extra cost to many existing Microsoft customers who have OneDrive / Sharepoint already.
  • We are Citrix partners so we can resell at a decent margin for those that require the extra features such as Workflow and integrations.
  • For existing Microsoft users who already have OneDrive / Sharepoint, it is a hard sell to justify the additional expense.
  • For those that require data sovereignty and utilize local storage zones it is a good value and keeps the administration simple.
First and foremost we are both a Citrix and Microsoft partner so we will always recommend their products. 3 years ago we found ShareFile's biggest selling point was the ease of setup, administration, and ease of use while still being an enterprise-grade product. We also enjoyed the local storage zones, which benefited a Citrix environment. At the time Dropbox was only a consumer product, Box was still basic, Google Drive required a Google account, and Sharepoint was too complex to set up and administer. Over the last 3 years, all these players have drastically improved their products and are all great, offering more enterprise-level features and making it simpler to use. ShareFile hasn't really improved on the product that much over the last 3 years and we are now finding it difficult to justify, as most of our clients are also Microsoft users and enjoy OneDrive / Sharepoint with seamless co-authoring and native integration with Teams, etc.
We find that tickets circle around Level 1 techs and response time is slow as Australia is not in a great time zone compared to their support team. When escalated to Level 2 and 3, sometimes issues get resolved but we find many times that our environment is blamed and they do not always take responsibility of their platform. We have also sometimes had to escalate issues to our local technical and sales reps to see any progress on tickets.

We find that our clients in accounting and financial services love Citrix ShareFile. The drive mapper function with Citrix Files gives users a familiar experience to those that have come from a local file share scenario. The ability to control access, control, and permissions is great. The tight integration with rightsignature is a bonus. We have also found other "hidden" features such as assigning an email address that uploads directly to a folder which is a great solution with scanner apps. Unfortunately for engineering firms that use CAD files or organizations with deep and complex folder structures and long filenames, performance is not up to scratch and definitely not recommended.
