Overall Satisfaction with Dropbox
I am a STEM researcher at a university. I use Dropbox to access and sync files across multiple computers in my lab, office, and laptop. Since I am a Linux user, I prefer the file system interface of Dropbox over the internet interface of Google Docs, etc.
Pros
- Uses the native file system of the computer so that files can be read/written from the command line.
- Recovery is helpful for getting back files I accidentally deleted.
Cons
- Sometimes, the syncing pauses unexpectedly, and I have to "Pause Syncing" and "Resume Syncing" to get it to work.
- Boosted productivity by negating the need for file transfers using USB thumb drives, which can be lost.
- Allows working collaboratively with others on a project, but only if both users are paid Dropbox account holders
Dropbox is ideal for individual users who need to share files across multiple computers. Collaboration with others can be done in Dropbox but it seems to lack some functionality compared to Google Drive and Microsoft software.
