Overall Satisfaction with Dropbox

Use Dropbox for sharing research documents and drafts among colleagues. Improvements over the years to Dropbox's tracking of who has a file open, and alerts to avoid conflicting versions, have helped immensely. I used to use this also for sharing readings and the like among students for classes; better course-management platforms have made that use less necessary.

Pros

  • share documents
  • maintain version history
  • allow access across platforms/devices

Cons

  • still get some conflicting versions
  • clearer information on what gets synced across users vs adjustable by each (e.g. folder names/structures)
  • sharing and unsharing is sometimes a bit fussier than it might be
  • Has made collaboration more feasible
  • Has helped my own file storage/organization immensely
  • Has made it super easy to switch among computers/devices, working either online or downloading my files
Has all the functionality I want. I frequently move among offices and locations, so being able to access my files securely from pretty much any computer, whether or not I create a desktop version of my Dropbox library, is invaluable.
I don't use Dropbox for forms at all; not sure how I would do so. But Google Forms has its own real shortcomings, so I would be happy to try out a Dropbox alternative! The most useful improvements for me would be in facilitating cloning prior forms (e.g. for iterative, but separate, surveys) and more user-friendly options in how results are delivered.

Do you think Dropbox delivers good value for the price?

Yes

Are you happy with Dropbox's feature set?

Yes

Did Dropbox live up to sales and marketing promises?

Yes

Did implementation of Dropbox go as expected?

Yes

Would you buy Dropbox again?

Yes

Collaborative research projects (compiling sets of background documents or research data) or publications are the most obvious use, in my world. That said, for live collaborations on specific documents, many colleagues prefer GoogleDocs. (I'm not always able to be online, and find GoogleDocs' interface a bit annoying, so still default to Dropbox, myself.)
